h4nd
Have a shitty autotrade? 2T jack, arm no longer comes up when I twiddle the lever. It looks like the rancid bacon grease has fallen out. Anyone refilled one of these? (thats a rubber bung to the right of the handle socket). Any quirks? Or do I just toss it, and how much for an OK trolley jack? Thanks W (edit: words)
sheepers
You can refill it with trans fluid. Engine oil will fuck all the seals and it won't work ever again.
h4nd
Ta man, good to know. Chch! help, I need auto trans fluid please??11!!!! (faaark, only auto I owned was the soarer. Great car, except for the fkn auto, drove me nuts. The mitsi galants don't count, I'm calling them as belong to the mrs...) Also, for the onlookers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission_fluid "In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, ATF contained whale oil as a friction modifier."
Taistorm
The hydraulic jack fluid is cheap enough to purchase from most automotive shops.
OSM Garage
Go see HTC Specialised Tooling on Epsom Road. That'l take bugger all oil. Im sure they'l give you some proper hydraulic oil. But you have to ask, why is it low on oil. Seals are probably rooted. These things are cheap as shit new aren't they?
CaMpylobacter
how does engine oil dicker the seals? I've got a similar one (i think it's a motoguard one. I remember it leaking when i was a little kid) down at the lockup and I just fill it with mystery oil/whatever finds it's way into my oil can for misc shit and it's never gotten any worse in the 20odd years I've known it to leak! I'd say if you don't use it heaps then just smash some whatever in it. I brim mine with it fully lowered. sometimes a little chooches out when you lower it again but meh
tortron
depends if the seals are pood i would refill and see what happens, they are easy to disassemble tho always remember never trust a jack, axle stands are safety first better living everyone
Bling
If it's just a small cheapy, and unless you're going the strip and replace seals / everything, i'd just get a new one. $40 usually gets you a new one. You could just lift your car by hand and save some $$$
Ogre
Jam any oil in there really. Hydro/ATF/Air tool oils work best tho.
sheepers
There is a fundamental difference between engine oil and trans/hydronic fluid. The seals in your made in China jack won't handle engine oil. They will for a bit, but eventually it will just drop its guts on the floor constantly.
yetchh
ATF is cheap as chips anyway, just nab some from your local gassy

Ogre
Make sure its jam, not marmalade. Marmalade will fuck the seals
