BlownCorona
right so tonight i made a stupid mistake, i torqued 2 of my conrods to the torque spec for the main bearing caps, was only alarmed when one snaped, so i now have 2 conrods with unusable studs, since im not going to use the ones that have not snapped since im certain they will still be fucked. what can be done about this? i do have another set of conrods, but they are still in an engine thats bolted into the corona and i really didnt want to be taking that engine out and appart before this new engine was ready to go in because im on a real tight schedule with me off to the airforce in less than a month and id rather leave the new engine unfinished than the entire car immobile. it looks like the studs would knock out, but where would i buy new ones? cheers still kicking myself at the stupid rookie mistake. the engine was so close to being ready too! KKtrips
Buy some ARP Rod bolts?. This - wouldn't be more than $100 for a set of rod bolts for a 4cyl. Providing it's a relatively run on the mill motor.
BlownCorona
toyota 18r the studs press through from the other side, sorta like a wheel stud would. can get a picture if you want, but its just gonna look like a snapped stud, can you not buy replacement studs? and where do i get arp stuff from? KKtrips
Search Google. 18R ARP rod bolts. Probably from summit or similar.
cletus
you could try toyota, maybe its the same bolt as some other toyota if its too old for them? http://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/arp-203-6003/overview/make/toyota
BlownCorona
they do look just like the above ARP items, will try toyota after xmas and hopefully sort something out im just glad they are infact replaceable. might also have a hunt around toyodiy and see how widely used they are, cant be THAT many rod bolts
KKtrips
Here are the ones for a 22R http://arp-bolts.com/kits/ARPkit-detail.php?RecordID=1159 http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/arp-203-6002/overview/
BlownCorona
just gonna put this here to save me time and for general interest. this is the part number for the rod bolt and a list of all the vehicles that share the part number http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?s=13265-39025%09&mG=on
BlownCorona
Here are the ones for a 22R http://arp-bolts.com/kits/ARPkit-detail.php?RecordID=1159 according to the above toyodiy listing, 22r and 18r share the same bolt. so these should suit if i cant get factory replacements by the way, whats the real benefit to ARP rod bolts? its not a huge power house, but mildly tweaked, if there's a significant benefit that im overlooking ill just buy the ARP gear cheers for the help! KKtrips
Stronger and probably overkill for what you want but they are readily available. Plus a full set of ARP's is probably cheaper than a pair of OEM rod bolts.
BlownCorona
will price up next week and make the call, it looks like that rod bolt is used on various 90s cars too, so might not be such a big deal afterall
BlownCorona
http://dsrturbo.com/arp-rod-bolts/203-6002.html seems reasonable presuming the company is legit, which im fairly sure they are, have heard of them before.
evil_si
Yea he's a Nz company, can be ok to deal with, can also be pretty bloody arrogant, Easiest option is to do it all the online rather than actually email or deal with him
BlownCorona
Provided I can punch in my card number and he will send me parts with no human interaction I'm happy
cletus
The first V8 i built for myself when i was an apprentice, i torqued up the last one and it snapped off. now i always replace them for peace of mind
thegreatestben
Yeah only time I snapped one was when supplied with incorrect information. You can't go wrong with ARP's for the price.
RUNAMUCK
If you rock ARP's, it's standard practise to have the big ends of the rods resized.
