nzstato
So, I have changed my mind on one of my projects and are going to be hunting out some 4age stuff in the future. I need to know what is the best platform to start with (I'm sure this has been done to death many times. Plan will be to run a rwd 4age with duel 45 DCOE, will be in a relatively small/light car so am invisioning building it for more high rpm. Mostly road use but occasional track day is possible in the future. Given that, what is the best block to start with? I prefered the red in my AE92 over some of the black tops I have driven but considering this will be a very different beast I am open to suggestions. P.S. Anyone going to be parting with much 4age over the next few months?
xsspeed
want a 2age? lol with twin carbs, I'd look at 16v as its been done lots, and would suggest smallport red top
Rookie
I would go 7afe block and head with a 4age crank, custom rods and hayabusa pistons. Should make ~250hp if you do it correctly.
Rookie
Alternatively, just buy a sr16ve, it would do everything the above motor will do, but cost you $1000. / This one http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/nissan/engines/auction-604862498.htm
SHGWAG
Oh HAI, I have a Silvertop 7A-GE sitting in my shed that needs to be gotten rid of. Someone's interested in it, but if he doesn't want it I'll comment in here.
Vintage Grumble
Silver top 20V is the best all round engine I think. Tho I dont know how VVT and carbs get along? Red top small port is prolly the best way to go for carbing I guess.
Rookie
You would need an ECU to sort the spark on a silvertop, unless you did a dizzy conversion/msd box/ magic, so you would just use that to trigger VVT. Redtops are probably the pick of the bunch. +1 for sr16ve.
nzstato
So some interesting pointers.... 7age? Unless I can find one already done (^^^) seems not to be worth the time/money/hassle, but can see why many have gone down that path. Good, I like the redtops.... Yes definately, stand alone ECU with multicoil would probably the easiest. Where do the options then lie, I hear T50 all the time, are some of the w series also able to bolt up? What options are cost effective?
Toucan
Revy bluetop in a light car. Or smallport. Or SR16ve as per rookies suggestion T box is all you need but you can get niteparts bellhousings to suit W boxes yup.
Truenotch
Smallport 4AGE with a J160 6speed box would be my pick.
Rookie
All of those boxes are shit, get a j160 (Markku knows whats up). Behind a sr16ve...
Vintage Grumble
A J160 from a s15 would bolt straight to a sr16ve wouldnt it? (Altezza and s15 6 speeds are the zact same box aint they?)
Truenotch
That'd be worth looking at... But Nissan aren't as straight forward are with FWD vs RWD blocks - they tend to be completely different.
Rookie
Not quite, All the RWD engine mount bosses are there on the block they just need to be drilled and tapped, and the starter is on the other side so 2 new mounts need to be made on the gearbox bell housing. And yes, they are.
Spencer
+ for the SR I would go K20A, but a whole other ball game to fit height wise and they are still expensive.

IIRC, there's no speedo drive from an S15 box, as their speedos read from the Dif?
Rookie
Tis true, but there are many other ways around it.
nzstato
I'm afraid it will have to be 4age with T50 for simplicity sake (and because I am fond of them), no to the SR20. Other than the water outlet are there any 4age parts which are rwd only?
Vintage Grumble
Alt bracket?
