felixx
Hi Guys I got new front wheel beaings for the anglia. 2 questions 1) Do I need specialist wheel bearing grease or is standard grease ok? 2) Whats the best way to apply the grease/ ensure I have enough/ not too much? Thanks in advance for your advice. fake edit: I googled this and found conflicting advice
Stu
I tend to chuck some grease in my hand and then kinda repeatidly tap the bearing into the grease against my palm - forces the grease into the roller bearings so you know its packed properly. No idea if this is an acceptable method but you get quite nicely grubby
Bling
I don't know the "rules" but last time I did some on a trailer I got wheel bearing grease (was pretty cheap). And I just kneeded grease into the bearings until it was all filled and no air left. That was a few years ago now and it's been passing WOF's so can't be too far wrong. I don't know if you NEED to use wheel bearing grease mind you.
felixx
sweet, will pick up some Wheel bearing grease tomorrow, do it once, do it right I guess. Once again OS proves its awesomeness
nzstato
Castrol GPL2 I think is the purpose wheelbearing grease I think. You can get a special tool which consists of two cups which force grease into the bearing or the 'grease in hand' tip above works. Though I usually end up with the crap everywhere
Stu
Works mean, and don't have to get too crazy on it
Seedy Al
I use Stu's method it works amazing for two hands and some grease. We call this packing the gearings
KKtrips
good demonstration right here.. the trick is getting the grease between the rollers rather than all over the bearing - so hitting the bearing against the very edge of the pile of grease is best for this otherwise it goes all over the show.. also do this with the wider part of the tapered bearing facing downwards (its a bigger gap to get the grease into) agxjGtmHV_4

sheepers
wheel bearing grease has a higher melting point and will not drop its oil during heavy breaking (heat) cycles. also its thickener is usually made of clay so "if its yellow, you've got wheel bearing grease there fellow" - a little rhyme i just made up to sound even more dick head like. just thought you'd like to know. UTERUS
Why you'd use machine/implement to mash grease into things, when you can use hands and finger paint the walls afterward is baffling.
Bling
Put grease on face and motorboat the bearings while thinking about bewbs, good plan.
felixx
OK wheel bearings done, think rumbly noise in old ones was due to a lack of grease more than anything. I used the tapping on my hand method.. took about 5- 8 minutes. Cheers guys, that was a big help
