Spend money on a car.... to save money?

Does not compute.

+1 to buy an Alto :P

LOL, what are you doing on this site if you don't understand why?

It is for the same reason I am putting a V8 in my falcon, but I an also making that as cheap to run as possible... rather than going to a 6

;D

Lets say that with the standard motor, you use say... $80 a week in gas.

Lets also optimistically say, that the new motor is 20% more efficient.

However, lets also say that your new motor costs $1500 to buy, $500 for cert, $1000 for things required for cert like cat converter, driveshaft loops, wiring, various bits and pieces that are required along course of the job.

Since your new engine will save you approximately $16 per week, it will take about 3 years and 7-8 months before you even break even on the money you've spent, compared to just driving the slightly less economical engine. Assuming you daily drive it everywhere, that is.

If you use it just as a weekend car, it will take about 11 billion years for your fuel saving economy plan to be worthwhile, not counting the cost of keeping wof/reg on a second car.

Anyway, in slightly more on topic/contributing news,

A friend of mine had a really nice facelift JZZ30 soarer with a 2JZGE in it.

Really nice car to drive, but still used stacks of gas, because its still a fairly big heavy car to lug around at the end of the day. I dont think you'll see as much of an economy increase from a more economical modern engine as you'd expect.

Not meaning to be hating on your plan, just saying, from a financial point of view I dont think it will pay off compared to other options.

My jzx90 with a standard twin turbo 1jz still gets about 10km/L, and thats around town. On the open road its epic.

The later model vvti ones are even better on gas, and make more power.

My plan involves my shell which has no engine/box at all :D

It was originally a 1G-GTE-auto, but seeing as that will cost more than...lets say a 1JZ-GE, I thought I might as well make it more economical as possible...for the cost of a cert. I am not actually looking at the engine on trademe, just using the ones I posted links of as references to engines I am looking at.

Plus the above quotes MPG sounds better than my 1300 escort which I drive everyday.

I should have stated at the start I have no engine for a supra whatsoever at the moment.

Least fuel usage has to be a 7M it will have constant BHG's so you'll never drive it..

on a serious note you may well be going down the wrong path chasing an economy improvement of 1 or 2 liters / 100km unless you are doing 80,000k's a year.

I want supra, I bike to most places (uni and work), but for long trips, I dont want a gas guzzler.

I have had a 7M, once head gasket was replaced, higher torque settings fixed is, did 100,00ks and then sold it. No problems, people just need to open the cam covers, pull out one head bolts, slide in a stud a d repeat the process, you dont even have to take off the head to fix it permanently...for $200

 still deciding?

In my opinion most of the inefficiencies of a turbo are there regardless of the boost, in fact with less boost it will probably become a more inefficient engine. You'd be better to put a smaller turbo on and run it at moderate boost so it spools up quickly and provides a good low-end and midrange torque increase.

The answer in my opinion is 2JZ-GE.
