kpr
yup, but in this case bran new smallport 4agze (8.9) pistons are only around 400 dollars including rings. tried, proven and cheap. rods on the other hand, not so much for 7a. 4a much better bang for buck imo. but guess thats not what this is about

From where dude? The cheapest I could find was $649. I've already got the forged rods, so thats no problem there.

vivaspeed
So what exactly is wrong with stock 7A rods? Seems to be scaremongering but not actually heard of anything wrong with the stock items in NA or STD boost applications.
Yowzer
The 7A rods are pretty thin. I have some lying around somewhere, they really don't look like the sort of thing you'd trust with a high power application.
vivaspeed
Yeah they are thin compared with 4age but similar to b16a etc. I've only heard of big ends letting go due to poor bolts. Anyone got a pic of a bent one???
Rookie
From what I have heard/ read it is indeed the rod bolt that lets go, I have heard of some guy in Aus who replace the rod bolts with ARP items and is revving his 7age to 8500 without a problem. I think the fact that most people boost these engines and really lean on them is the reason why people replace the rods straight off the bat. Yowzer
8500 on the factory rods? Damn Guess they're a bit better than they look
Yowzer
In saying that, they don't look much different from the 4AGE ones in this pic \ I'm sure mine are skinnier.
ae85 fiend
Yeah hahaha, same with the ones I've got, they seem a whole lot smaller too (7a ones)
kpr
looks like its beside a silvertop rod? smallport has the excessively large rods 7a can't be any smaller than blacktop anyway!
Yowzer
I wonder what the actual strength difference is? The blacktop ones are pretty damn tiny coz they wanted them to be as light as possible, but I wonder how much strength they actually sacrificed, or whether they are made of stronger material to compensate. Truenotch
I've seen a 250KW 7AGTE running on factory rods with no issues... He did quite a few seasons of racing and will only replace them when he builds the next motor for 500hp.
Shandangles
Just get Standard 4agze 8.9:1 pistons, cheap, readily avaliable and proven to over 500 whp in many, many cars
Dell'orto
I've seen a 250KW 7AGTE running on factory rods with no issues... Truenotch
That was Leighton at Ace. I think he had it limited to around 7k, maybe 7500.
Dell'orto
Thought it might have been...7500 would still be a good effort!
