LingLing
Right slightly screwed up today. All the input will be appreciated. have taken the rear end off. Main problem: r I can't take the diff head off, have taken off the bolts off at the ring seal, the head is actually loosened up. There is a 24mm nut at the front which connects to the drive shaft. Do I need to take that off? also, How do I not wasting any time to trying to praise all the linkage out and in? is there any good order? thank you
danger
... Have you removed the axles?....
Raizer
Taken the axles out? Edit: Beaten
LingLing
no, I have not. Dam, That's going to be tricky, because everything is free movement at the moment. So What should I do exactly?
danger
It wont be tricky. remove rear calipers, remove bolts behind discs, possibly bolt wheel back on and pull/kick till comes out. Keep everything clean.
danger
If in doubt. Google it.
LingLing
Ok cheers. So I don't have to do anything to the 24 mm nut at front of the diff head where connects to the drive shaft?
kpr
no don't touch that!
danger
I'm not even sure what you're trying to achieve with all this and cbf reading but if you do decide to undo it, first mark on both the nut and pinion bolt where they line up so you can retighten it to that position afterwards. Testament
oh man sorry dude have you got a manual for the ae86. surely haynes or even factory manuals aren't too hard to get/you might even find them online if you are lucky but yeah as people are refering - the axles go into the splines in the diff head/carrier so you have to withdraw them (take the axles out) before you can pull the diff head out the front. you dont want to touch the pinion nut though. I suggest you find the manuals as above/ trawl the net and read up on how diffs go together

LingLing
yeh, just got off the phone from Cam. Yeh, Probably it's good idea to get a mechanic to do it as Pinion seal is nightmare to replace.
LingLing
Ok, Here is the update: The head is out, looks all pretty good apart from there is/was NO SEAL at the ring part. NO wonder it leaked oil!! Questions: Is this 1,1.5,or 2 way diff? do you see any problems in the photos? Should I redo the pinion seal? I don't know it leaked or not. Does it leak often from there? here is some photos:
