sweedazz101
Hey OS, so I have a mk2 esky with a 1300 that could use a bit more power. I'm relatively new to the car scene and was just wondering what are some mods you can do apart from extractors and a bigger carb. How much HP is possible without breaking the bank? Yes I know everyone says just put a 1600 in but due insurance and a few other reasons its not gonna happen + plus it would be awesome beating people off the line in a 1.3L Any help on mods would be greatly appreciated
jakesae101
seriously put a 1600 in it no one will tell the difference but i guess if you want to do a 1300 doing a full reco on the engine. with bigger cam porting on the head bump the compression up could go oversize valves and put hardened valve seats in and get a 3 angle valve job
durty
yeah fully worked you might get to 15 hp or so

Hmm yeah been looking at them. Would be a good project. How easy are they to install? I know so many Escorts have them. Theres one for $750 on trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =392363744 Doesnt have manifolds or anything though. Sorry for being such a n00b haha. Borgweiser
Do not listen to anyone who say's a Pinto is a good idea, let alone an easy swap.. Put a side draft 38 or 40 carb on, plane head, fit roller rockers if funds allow and cam it up. Should be one quick 1300, I should know- I used to run one in a mk2 years ago and I tuned it up owing to it having only 1200-k's from new and been too good to throw away. 1600 is the best bet for starting on tbh but the 1300 will rev harder, so lightening the flywheel and balancing would also be a good idea. Oh and extractors of course and a coby, every escort needs a coby
sweedazz101
http://www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=6363 Thanks, I had a look at that before. I was just wanting an opinion on difficulty level for someone relatively new.

Minus extractors and coby
davidian
sorry Borgweiser but cant agree. pinto is your best cheap bet but in reality if you wanted to throw money at it to make it go i wouldnt touch the 1300 or a pinto, just go newer and injected. really hard to coment without a budget or skill level to go from. Rookie
Put a 1600 in it, easiest and cheapest. But if you are set on the 1300 then just stick with the basics carbs extractors head work and cam. You will probably sink >$2g into this if if you pay someone to do it. If it was me and I really couldn't have a 1600 just yet, but could in the future and I didn't want to do an engine swap, I would max the head put a set of side draughts and a good set of extractors on a stock bottom end untill it dies (the stock cast iron crank is only good to 7000 or so rpm reliably). Then build up a 1600 bottom end with 1300 pistons to bump the compression ratio and a wild cam and be done with it or if you are rich put a steel crank in it too. Like polishing any turd, the gain won't be worth the effort or dollars but thats not really why we do it is it?
sholdowa
the 1300 pistons will go well with a 1600 block and crank...
My name is Russell
These engine standard can be quite fun just playing with diff ratios, wheel sizes etc can change there performance a fair bit.
kritta
hi pal, many years ago i done a head job, kelford cosworth a5, and twin 40`s....awsome result...later added big valves, extractors, bedford pistons and a balance...would scream to 8000...tho gearboxes became the issue back then...some 25 years ago...i say go for it....great fun
sweedazz101
Thanks for the all the feedback/ideas guys, really appreciated. Have decided to slowly build this one up over time so I can keep it as a daily driver and not have to worry about engine swaps just yet. Thanks heaps
