J-W-G
How much work is needed to put 4age into an escort? Has anyone done it? Just contemplating engine upgrades needs good tunability and economy suggestions welcome Thanks

EvoBilly
if your not going to turbo or supercharge it theres better options out there then a 4age they don't have all that much power n/a with out major mods ive got a 16 valve in my ke30 and had a levin 20valve they are good engines and common for parts
glen
i'm fairly sure this has been done heaps, but generaly there not that quick. a pinto'd escort would be close if not just as fast. and they go straight in. but if your still keen, id go with blacktop 20v http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-c ... scort.html build up of 4age'd mk2
Horse25
yeah, i know a guy with a Sliver top in his rally car, makes 120HP a the wheels, so yeah same as a pinto, maybe a little lighter...
SHGWAG
OSC has just got his 4A-GTE MK2 Escort Wagon up and running, told me he was going to put up a build thread for it some time this week once hes sorted all the photos. Mods that come to mind: Radiator support panel Gearbox tunnel, crossmember & mounts (Running a W55 gearbox) Engine Mounts Altered the sump majorly If you're running injected, you'll need a new fuel system to suit, including all new lines. J-W-G
What about a turbo'd zetec?
lou
I know a guy that ran a turb'd 4age in his 4 door esky hitting about 210kw. Was absolutely mad.
bsp
I agree,if you are leaving it n/a i would go for something newer/larger cap,all alloy etc, depends how much you want to spend,4ag gives pretty good bang for buck especially turbo'd. a gze will happily make 150-180rwkw unopened(if its not a shitter) If you have an auto shell,no tunnel mods are needed for a w series( mine sits quite low in the bay and tunnel but thats what you want anyway) even the shifter pops up in std location sits nice and low and back in the bay, handles mint i had to cut all of the panels under the rad support out to fit a custom full width cooler, but retained the vertical brace and its all sweet dont forget to suss out a hyd clutch if you want more details just ask cheers, Ryan
smokin' joe
sc14 powered zetec FTW
shizzl
theyr easy as fuck to fit... i did one in a mk2 sport a while ago.. used a small port motor, a k50 box(similar to a t50 but was cable clutch.win), used a ke70 driveshaft and had a drivesahft adaptor made up so the driveshaft etc stayed as a stock ke70 shaft.. ae86 extractors fitted unmodded. had nightparts mod a manifold and loom.. made crossmembers to suit obviously.. 4ages are fucking cool motors........run what you want to run, fuck the rest
DavidTheCreator
if your going non-turbo then i would just go for a pinto with a 205 block or ca18de, if your going turbo then i would go ca18det. and theres lots of info/projects with pintos and ca18s in eskys on oldschool and both sorts of engine/gearbox are cheap as
OSC
put a 4age into it. if your not going turbo it should be easy with no tunnel mods and alot less sump/oil pick up modification. smallport would be the go and even putting in a hydraulic clutch isnt that hard. 4ages go great rev like there's no tomorrow and well 4age inside is where its at. ive got a bluetop sitting in the shed with a rwd intake on it thats up for sale. if you tilt the engine on a ever so slight lean towards the passengers side and redrill and drop the brake master cylinder bracket it will clear everything easy. wiring for them even with the standard ecu isnt that bad and you can pick up easy to wire in looms off trademe for cheap. so many things you can do to get easy extra power out of them and theres always the option of turbocharging later on with ze internals. Seedy Al
I would choose a 4age over a pinto I raced an Escort with a pinto in it, with my 5k powered ke25, and it was a tie, I would have won if I had a 5 speed. My boss was fucken gutted becasue he was all about the pinto
shizzl
i never had to mod the brake sys or the sump for my one.. i had pics on here in a project thread but i think theyr long gone now.. even the shifter on the k50 lined up with the stock hole.. an engineer mate did it for me and i gave him a dirt bike as payment... had a shit load of room for radiator etc... OSC
the sump wont need to be modified unless you want the engine right at the very back of the engine bay. also depending on small or big port will depend on fit. os peeps just be hating on the 4age since ages ago. but in all seriousness just put a 4age in it auh. DavidTheCreator
im not sold on the 4age thing, especially when pintos are so easy to put in there and fairly easy to get power out of. plus aftermarket 2nd hand parts for a pinto are way cheaper then for a 4age
OSC
reliability of a 4age is so much better then that of a pinto. and as anyone who plays with cars knows cheaper is not usually better.
shizzl
pinto over a 4age because pinto bits are cheaper to get?? shit, thats like saying youd prefer a 4g63 over a cosworth!!!
smokin' joe
im not sold on the 4age thing, especially when pintos are so easy to put in there and fairly easy to get power out of.plus aftermarket 2nd hand parts for a pinto are way cheaper then for a 4age with you on that 0.060" over forged pistons with some headwork and a cam will be similar price to just the extra bits to convert standard FWD 4age with a T-50, and you still have to buy the motor and box to have a torqueless 1600cc twinky in the hole. 2160cc pinto with sierra box is actually capable of pulling the car along, not just making noises and talking about it. when you put the 4age in, and are dissapointed with it, prepare to spend plenty to upgrade, as you have 16 lobes/valves to modify, and then need a decent gearset/ratio to make it work, due to the peaky nature of them. 4age is a good engine, but cubes are hard to argue with
