grdwalker
hey there, ive found a cortina 2l for my escort and the guy im getting it off said a drive shaft loop would be needed. it will be with the type 9 gearbox and driveshaft he is supplying. (off a mk2 escort conversion) is this a necessity? is the shaft gonna fly off at all? or are there other reasons? ALSO: im looking for a clutch cable from an 83/84 mk3 cortina. any hookups? cute wee gem
Its a cert requirement on engine conversions, just a precaution if the drive shaft fails as far as I'm aware. Your shaft shouldn't fly off but it has happened on some high powered cars.
Gaz
You deff need it to pass a cert. You deff need it to pass a cert. You deff need it to pass a cert. Gets messy below so this post is edited with details. - Yes you need one or you wont be able to get a cert (which you need for your conversion) - Diff cert guys accept differant things. e.g my guy wanted 6mm thick steel by 60mm wide strap. - He also wanted plates ontop where it bolts through the floor so it sandwhiched the floor - He also wanted M10 bolts min to be used. - So make it to above specs and you should be sweet! - It has to fully enclose the d/s 360° - It has to be within 150mm of the front universal That is all. l1ttle_d3vil
is the shaft gonna fly off at all? or are there other reasons? yes. any number of things can fail on the driveshaft, uni's, shoddy welds etc etc. other than possibly flipping your car, it could also cut your fuel lines if they run next to it and fuel + heat = bad. not unheard of. and as said, im pretty sure it is a requirement for any engine conversion. OSM Garage
If its no hastle putting in a driveshaft hoop, do it. Why not? Just another safety precaution. Can only be good huh? Just ask macabre!
escorted
Yes you need a cert and yes you need a drive shaft loop It needs to be 6mm plate. As for the clutch cable you can buy one new from Repco for the sum of $60 Cheers, Matt
EFI_LC
I have a question as well Should it go at the back in case the uni's break but what happenes when it slips out the box? Should it go in the front to stop the front digging in ? Should you have 2?

Should it go in the front to stop the front digging in ? Should you have 2? front uni snaps it'll dig in and try to flip the car. rear uni snaps it'll create a nice shower of sparks thats all. only time you need two is if you have a two-piece driveshaft. My name is Russell
It needs to be within 150mm from the rear of the gearbox. I have a two piece driveshaft and got away with only having one loop at the front.
RUNAMUCK
I saw a CA18DET powered kp60 at the drags destroy it's tail shaft. People were snooping under the car on the trailer and say "oooh, maybe I should put a loop on my car sooner rather than later" I still haven't though. bit it is on the ten year plan. Gaz
This thread is getting confusing. Mr.Mk1
I didnt have one, i passed cert with an engine conversion, just to confuse the situation further. Engine was a 1200 pre-crossflow, now a 1600 cross flow. But there is a side note saying "conversion done before ___some date__"

EFI_LC
Thanks for the info.... I will do it with the Hi-lix upgrade soon I dont have a cert but then I don't need one as my engine was updated from a 2250cc to 3300cc back in the old days of garage declerations Basically I can run anything that come out standard or optional on the 3300 which happens to include the triple webers and the previous injection I had as it was not specific so I checked it out with both a cert guy and rang up Wellington
R100
I have a two piece driveshaft and got away with only having one loop at the front. Your lucky, I have a two piece in my cressida. The cert guy made me fit 2 loops, one for each driveshaft. Dumb. I guess each certifier is different.

lowlancer
For proof of awesome car pole vault, look at macabres project thread. His d-shaft came out at like 150kmh. Hilarity ensued Dunno if he had a loop though, I guess not?
