  1. Also change the oil first before doing that - especially if the oil level is now over the full line
  2. Do modern nylons still have issues with absorbing water and swelling over time?
  3. Not sure if it is mentioned in the thread, but as you stated you haven't used a carburetter car before, are you sure you don't just have the choke stuck on?
  4. The old gearstick boot was a mess so I pulled out the 2K Sewing Machine and put together a new boot. Also made up a new surround for the handbrake, but I will probably put the ugly rubber one back on as it looks better than my abortion. I also adjusted the handbrake sensor which was randomly flickering on with the handbrake down. It now comes on just before the first click. I even found an old pen under the carpet. It has been there at least 18 years by the looks of it (Ansett New Zealand). Interior and exterior need a good cleaning now. The car is filthy...
  5. If you don't want to keep the car I will give you what you paid for it
  6. Bugger. Got distracted on the mountain bike and lost track of time. Urgh..
  7. What about GL-4+? Penrite seems to reckon it is safe with synchros, but since when can you trust an oil company...
  8. You really just need twin sidedraughts on your bbq.
  9. The fact that the oil level has gone up would indicate, as rustisize says, that there is something such as coolant down there in it. Oil floats on water, so try drop the drain plug (you should be doing this anyway as the old oil needs to be swapped out after sitting so long). If the coolant has made it into the oil then you either have a leaking gasket (head gasket most likely) or some sort of corrosion hole in the block. If the car only had water instead of proper coolant, then your engine could well be rooted after sitting for years.
  10. You sure someone hasn't swapped a Toyota 4M into it? \ling
  11. Pull out the spark plugs and spray some oil/penetrating oil down into the cylinders. Give the starter a flick every day for a week or so and it should come free.
  12. Do the rough thing and degrease it and then pour a little bit of seal sweller into the fluid. /ling
  13. When I had no access to a slide hammer I just used some chain around the axle flange and got a decent run up, it was just as easy as using a slide hammer. Rope is no good, you need something that will transfer a shock load directly to the axle. Using the brake drum is usually no good if they are in tight as you need more distance to build up enough momentum.
  14. What's the best way to slow the degradation of door/window seals, short of putting the car in a garage?
  15. Clear the diagnostic codes and then check again, could be an older fault?
  16. Could possibly be the transistor module for the coil
  17. Engine starter fluid would make it do stuff though. I reckon either the distributor is way out of time or the cams are way out of time.
  18. What are the odds that your distributor is 180 degrees out of phase?
  19. Those accessory belts would have gone for another 50,000 km. You should have seen the alternator belt on my old FX-GT, it was fucked from the day I got the car but I couldn't get the P/S belt off without excessive butchery due to previous butchery so I just left it on and did 60,000 km before selling the car. As for the clutch, if the engine is out of the hole on those cars it is silly to not replace the clutch unless it is virtually brand new as it is a huge job to get to it. A TGP clutch kit would probably be about $150? Hopefully it will be back up and running soon, I like your car.
  20. Fonts are also incorrect on modern plates. /I'm still waiting to be pulled over for my home made plates
  21. Also for the love of Jesus, rescale your ADC values to give easy to interpret values, ie an AFR value and TPS in %. And run the x axis in seconds if you aren't already (not sure if this would really help on a carb though as they are pretty limited temporally). You should be able to set up a secondary axis on the RHS so that stuff is easy to read. Also just because I'm a pedantic motherfucker, you should enable the background grid on the plots, should make reading stuff slightly easier. /end pedantic ravings and congratulate you on getting shit done
  22. You can indeed go full EFI without certing it (well not legally, but you will never get caught this way). Just get your shitty old single carb and bore the centre out and fit in/make throttlebody EFI bits. Yer an engineer Harry.
