Michael14's 1959 Dodge Kingsway Discussion

Recommended Posts

Discussion thread for the Kingsway.

Any help with parts, general advice greatly appreciated! No real timeline on this one, but have a friend of Dad's that's going to help pull the engine out to have a better look, Dad suspected that it needs new piston rings, and we have a gasket set for it there that Dad is adamant is the wrong set, so looking for a gasket set replacement option if anyone has any leads!

No real timeline on this one, pretty sure all of the bits are there to complete but step 1 - remove the engine and figure some stuff out!

61 Plymouth beside it is a story for another day...

Thanks @Lord Gruntfuttock - Dad always wanted to get this back on the road but never quite got to it. .

Looks like he planned to do a fair bit of work on it as the gearbox back is all out, all of the fluids were drained so he knew it was going to be sitting for a while. Unfortunately ill health got the better of him, really makes me wish we did it together earlier but hindsight is 20/20!

Did the marriage last?

The one the car was used for? Unfortunately not but sounds like they're amicable. My parents marriage did go the distance though, despite Dad continuing to buy vehicles over the years! (61 Plymouth beside it was acquired on my Mum & Dads honeymoon)

Just yesterday sold a 55 Plymouth Plaza wagon to the guy who had the Kingsway as the wedding car so was good to have a yarn with him and have it sold to someone with a bit of a family connection.

Cool car! Make sure you re-use those black number plates when you get it registered again.

Quote

Dead Black Plates renewal process.

Do Not Get your car vinned or attempt to re-license.

Follow this process first:

To re-use your old Black Plates you need to ring this number:
0800366988
Email: reuseofplates@nzta.govt.nz with the following information:

They want photos of the plates
Photo of body tag
Proof the plates are from the vehicle like a photo of wof sticker
or receipts for work done to the car with plates listed.
And or ownership papers or bill of sale like a declaration etc.
Your contact details

10 day process time or sooner.

IMPORTANT: Do not start the vin process or the plates will be disallowed for ever ie unusable forever.

Wait for LTSA to send you the ok with a number you are to give to the VIN agent like VTNZ or VINZ.

Nice one brother!

Welcome to the oldschool family!

I'm fucking stoked that this car is in Christchurch!

My grandad owned a '59 belvedere new. (My dad still speaks about how epic it was)  an absolute menace like @Carsnz123 might know a bit about the mopar side valve engines.   I'd be pretty keen to come see it some time.

Awesome project, agree on orginallity but want to plant the seed of some modern conveniences to improve drivablity and mean you are keen to use it more as its less of a hasslem

Ie EFI (if the carb needs a rebuild anyway) maybe some brake upgrades and more modern suspension replacements if required

Keen to see progress and updates :)

Thank you very much.

Kingsway plates are live, but this will be very handy for the Plymouth next door. I detest the white plates on old cars so I'm glad this is possible!

Absolutely man - send me a private message if you like - I'm open to as much information as I can get about them.

I have a some Japanese stuff as well (1980 Toyota Cressida and a 91 180sx which I don't so much classify as old school) but this is definitely something different for me, Dad was obviously a big Mopar man.

Thanks very much, yeah maybe some minor stuff down the track - would be nice to see it running first and enjoy it for what is all, lumps and all for a wee while I think.

No real timeline for this one, we've got a serious amount of stuff to go through at Dad's place and there's a number of parts in amongst it all that I'll need to find for both cars. Most of the Dodge stuff is nearby, I believe. Hoping to get the engine out in the next month or two, just need to figure out if this gasket set we've got for it is correct or not.

Cool project.

Why does the motor need to come out?

Overhearing could be as simple as a water pump or head gasket or bad radiator.

Get it running ans find out where the actual problem is rather than throwing good money after bad it

Hopefully it's solid and the re rego proscess is easy.

@Carsnz123 has done a lot of re registration through his work so can probably recommend steps and a good place to go

Messaging Carsnz123 now - thanks for the lead on this one everyone.

Reason for pulling the engine is so the guy helping me (one of Dad's mates who's a mechanic) can work on the car at his own place after his day job. Plates are live - hopefully get it running and get a WOF then away laughing.
