Vintage Grumble
Just now, Truenotch said: This thing Ian looking snazzy with the front panels in place. Have you checked or set up the bump steer on this bad boy? Why thank you sir. The panels do stop a fair bit of sand getting into your undies. And no, i've not really checked it for bump steer. I think my bro in law worked it all out, but I couldn't understand his workings/instructions and just welded the knuckles on in the spot where everything seemed the least shit/cleared everything. When I redo the front suspension for the braked hubs, i'll try copy the Barracuda front end as best I can, as I have the plans, and they worked all that shit out.
Vintage Grumble
Yeh nah the motor didn't like the breathers going into the plenum, which is odd, because that seems to be how they are on the bike? I've run the breather tube high up the roll cage, to try keep it out of the smut, will do some research and try find a solution. Anyways, the deck of the trailer is pretty much done, so got some goodies to carry on with, My original plans went out the window, it is going to be sprung now, and I'll have little fold up ramps rather than a tilting deck. Made the spring hangers today, clamped the shit out of them to avoid warping, The deck is made from 40mm wide RHS, and the spring components are 50mm wide, so welded them to 50x5 angle, which will get welded to the deck. Should strengthen it up a bit too. Hope to get the draw bar on next week, and then figure out the axle width and location. Popular Post Vintage Grumble
I've started collecting and making parts for this POS, to convert the rear to independent suspension, upgrade the front to the braked hubs, and get long travel shocks all round. Bits for the spool/centre drive thing, new taper lock sprocket, front disc off a CB250, and a flex plate and starter from a MAZDA 3. Also a 30mm shaft and bearings for it to live on, I got some MX5 axles and hubs too. The axles are quite small and light, and have a flanged end, so perfect for this, The chunk of hollow bar is to make new hubs, as the MX5 hubs are too big to fit in the quad bike rims. So I machined up some hubs that use the MX5 bearings, and will make doofers to connect to the suspension arms. I also made some adapters to go from the MX5 4x100 pcd to Yamahas ATV 115x4 pcd. I found some I had started making (can't remember what for?) out of 6mm plate, so hopefully they are strong enough, I also got a few 16 and 20mm rod ends for the front end, as that's how the barracuda hubs attach, Still lots to do, but slowly chipping away at it.
Popular Post Vintage Grumble
Yeh so I haven't driven the off-roader since a week or so before the initial covid lockdown, and still haven't finished the trailer, but I did just make a terrible financial decision, probably induced by severe sleep deprivation, but hey, these things happen. So a customer of mine offered me an unused pair of 10" travel FOX factory racing remote res coil overs, at basically half the new cost. I then priced up a second pair to match, and the eight springs I need to go with them. Not surprisingly it got very expensive. The new second hand shocks, plus another matching pair, plus all the required springs was going to be north of $3600. I also thought about doing a mixed set up with FOX air shocks on the front, and these coil overs on the back, but my OCD wouldn't allow it. So, I've ordered a full set of FOX 2.0 10" travel air shocks (Basically the cheapest decent shocks you can get for this sort of application) and you don't have the added cost of springs. These are way too flash for this thing, but I have a cunning plan. So because I am basically going to cut the front and back ends off the current offroader for all these suspension and drive line upgrades, and because the cockpit is a little small for me, I've decided I will build a new frame from scratch, and then sell the current offroader to possibly pay for a more modern (EFI hopefully) engine (or just use the spare 600). Because SXS's have become so popular, a few motorbike parks are having SXS days, so I will actually have legit places to use this, which makes me happy. Now to finish the other trillion jobs I have to do, so I can play with this thing sometime in the future. Regards, VG. 10
Popular Post Vintage Grumble
So I got sick of being a grown up the other day, and took this thing out for a blast, the first time in over 20 months. I had fun hooning around, barely in control. It was running really well, until it wasn't. It started running like shit, due to a stuck float, so that was game over for the day. I assumed sand had gone up the vent hose, even though it was like a meter long, and way up in the air. Got the carbs off, the first float needle was quite hard to get out, due to a grain of sand being jammed in there. Now what's confusing me, is that A: it's on the float needle in the first place, seeing as this should have gas flowing over it most of the time, and B: it's on the inlet end of the needle, meaning it had to go against the flow all the way up the side?. Now you'd think it just got into the gas tank, and flowed into the carb, but the tank has no sand in it, and it also has a fancy filter right before the carb, which also has no sand in it. I'm still sure it's got in through the vent hose, as they were full of sand, and there was sand in the bowls, but it does seem weird that it managed to go against the flow of fuel, and get that far in? Must have just sloshed in there I guess?. Anyways, I'm going to weld a nipple on the intake, on the outside/above the restrictor plate, and see if it runs properly with the vents connected there. If not I'll have to have another filter just for the vents. Also, I've decided that I won't modify this buggy, I'll make a complete new one, and then sell this one. I want to change soooo much on this, it just makes sense to start from scratch. I need the cockpit to be a bit longer and wider, I want faster steering, hydraulic clutch, front brakes, better shocks/suspension travel and independent rear, and more ground clearance. Also the dash is pointless, so will probably just have big ass warning lights in the future. I will probably just build a barracuda, as I have the plans, with a few minor mods to suit some of the gear I already have. Speaking of which, the shocks showed up, Regards, VG. 10
Vintage Grumble
P S. I plan to use the money from the sale of this, to fund a more modern injected engine. I don't really need any more power, but hey, if that's a byproduct of a newer/injected motor, I won't complain.

Ha, you already said that a few posts back, you silly goose VG. So I welded a nipple in the thing, Then I put a temporary tap on the plenum drain just in case, I took it out for a blast, and it ran beautifully, and now the breather air is filtered, so sand shan't be a problem anymore. I blasted around for ages, but got a bit carried away on a very rough section of road, and ended up bottoming out the back suspension very badly a few times in quick succession. Like tasting blood bad. And then a few moments later it started flooding again, so I guess a carb didn't enjoy the bashing. Yet to pull them off, but confident it won't be sand related this time. I also completely lost my mind, and purchased a friggen CBR1000RR engine!!!?!?!! So I'm going from 85hp @ 11000rpm & 53nm @8000 up to 172hp @ 11250rpm & 115nm @8500rpm, shits going to be whack. I have also listed this bad boy on TM, just to see what happens. 13
Vintage Grumble
I couldn't get the float to un-jam by smacking the carbs, so whipped the carbs off and opened them all up, all clean as a whistle, so the sand was definitely coming up the vent tubes. Nothing obviously wrong with them, and once refitted it ran perfectly again. Not sure if these carbs just don't like getting slapped around, or if the float needles are a bit worn, causing them to stick? Anyways, very short video of the last outting, thanks to @keltik
Popular Post Vintage Grumble
So I sold the old girl over a year ago, and haven't done any work on the new one since about then too. But I want to go off-road'in, so I sold out, and purchased a SXS. I looked at a couple of RZRs, but didn't fit in them, then found a YXZ1000R, which I fitted in, and it really tickled my fancy. So the new sleigh is a 2018 Yamaha YXZ1000R. The dude that owned it also had a 2016 YXZ, which he had turbo'd, and then blew up due to losing an oil line, so he purchased the 2018 as an engine donor. He started ripping it to bits then realized it probably wasn't the most financially smart thing to do. So he swapped a few parts between them, and then left the 2018 in a shed for a few years. I got it relatively cheap, because he has taken a few goodies off it, and left it half dismantled. When I got it home a few weeks ago, I went over the whole thing checking bolts and seeing what was missing. It was only missing one front sway bar link, the front bull bar, one hub cap, a few bolts, and lots of plastic clips. I gave it a good clean up, got a new sway bar link, changed one CV boot, and applied a shit ton of bolts and plastic clips, and it's pretty much ready to go for a hoon. You may have noticed it's quite colourful, that's because all the blue bits + the shocks are from the 2016 one. It also has 15" aftermarket wheels rather than the 14" bead locks it came with. This is what its meant to look like, I would like to make it look less patriotic/American one day, and cut down on the range of colours. I also need to make a sweet bull bar for it, before I destroy the front. The neat thing about these, is they are not CVT like the Polaris and Can-ams, they have a 5 speed dog box that is electrically shifted via flappy paddles, and has a big old clutch pack that is controlled by an ECU. They are also a 3 cylinder, so sound way better. And that's the main thing, sounding cool while banging through gears. I will add some extra bars to the cage (they are a bit shit std) and put 4 point harnesses in it sometime soon. The other big upgrade is to widen the track all around with 50mm wheel spacers, apparently it makes them handle a lot better. Looking forward to doing some skids/jumps/flips/rolls in this soon, neeeeaaaat. Regards, VG.
cletus
That looks fun. E&H motors in pukekohe do a lot of tuning/turboing/adding roll cage bars/etc on these things, they may have parts you need?

Yeh they set up the shocks on this one, re-valved them and put dual rate springs on the front. They do the wheel spacers, but are super spendy, and they are just 4x110 all around, so china might be the best bet. With the cage stuff I'll ask if they do weld in bits, but I think they generally build complete new cages from scratch. I'll look into that before I start anything. There is one of their re-flashed ECU's on TM ATM, sort of tempted by that.

Popular Post Vintage Grumble
Sorted a few more things, applied a fire extinguisher, and my overnight parts from Japan (2 weeks from the US of A) arrived, so I now have 4x hub caps too, Also I forgot to mention, the first owner of this didn't have the use of his legs, so it was fitted with hand controls. I found a couple of steel plates from that set up that hadn't been removed, and removed them. The only remnants of the hand controls is a few small bonus holes in the floor. Then this afternoon I took it out for a blast, and by hokey it's a lot of fun/terror. It's pretty damn quick, and it's sort of amazing how quickly you can go over some pretty gnarly terrain. My brain is still going "oh shit, this is going to hurt!!" And then it just glides over it like a champ. I also discovered my wife's screams are much louder than the exhaust. And that it can transport at least 7 people in one go. So practical. One thing I'm not 100% sure on, is two of the tyres have been carved to have a wider groove in the tread, I put the cut ones on the back as they look gruntier, but I'm now thinking the grooves might be to improve steering? Current front/uncut: Cut ones on the back: What ya reckon? The cuts wouldn't give more driving traction, so must be meant to go on the steering end? Oh, and the only failure of 40ish KM of hard hooning today was I lost one rear caliper bolt, but I fixed it good as. Oh and damn, for something with no low range, it can get up some crazy rough/rutted/undulating/steep hills, blew my mind. Pretty stoked with this thing, but need harnesses and roll cage upgrades sooner rather than later. Regards, VG.
datlow
Pretty sure bro in law does roll cage stuff etc as goes through a few sxs and fixes for other people He's in papamoa, I can inquire with him tomorrow when I see him? Vintage Grumble
Took this thing out for another test drive, starting to get used to what it can do. Rubbish cell vids of a few rips: Mate from Ack didn't manage to break it, and he's an expert at breaking things, so that's encouraging. Not sure if you can tell from the vid, but the exhaust sounds very restrictive, so that's on the mods list now. (Not that it needs more power) Also discovered it's limited to 125kmh, probably don't need to go any faster, but I don't like things telling me how fast I can go. Attempted to do some jumps, but was a bit chicken, as the jump wasn't great, and you had to go faster that I felt comfortable with to get air. Getting braver with each drive though. Vintage Grumble
Had a gork at the exhaust, it has a spark arrestor in it, which looks fairly restrictive. The internet tells me removing it has no bad effects and some benefits. I also broke all 6 bolts that hold it in, so guess it's staying out for now. It's a fair bit louder so will see it it's too loud next outing. Leaves a huge hole, but shiny cover makes it less accommodating.
