Mof
I'm glad you're getting somewhere with that engine, because I got nowhere with that parts one down here
Popular Post ThePog
Yea so there was a wee saga with the engine parts, Trundles rang and said the only crank they had was damaged, so they had only sent the seals, gaskets and bearings. I spent a bit of time trying to find another crank but nothing was available. Plenty of complete engines for too much money, but then what fucking use were all the other parts. So I suggested I send it all back and he got all pissy and said he would find another crank, which he actually did. So we will wait and see what turns up. I have been selling off shit like a demon, I've got 2/3rds of the money to pay for the coating, but I have to wait for some latches I ordered off Ali Express to sort the drawers so I can get it done. In the meantime I have been tidying up the last few things I have to do. I have needed to get some sort of tiedown detail into the deck, but preferably without going any wider, or having them down low and preventing the drawers from opening. I decided to do it this way, which was laborious but reasonably tidy. I can also use the detail as a mount for sides if I need to; I also made something proper for the low range boot to mount too; Might have to start the many jobs I have been neglecting around the house now..
Popular Post ThePog
Not much to report as I am still in the process of scraping together the funds for chassis coating. This is hampered by me spending quite a lot of the money I have been saving on frivolous new engines and such. This came about as I was alerted by many lovely people including @Willdat? That there was a cheap TD42 on FB marketplace. It turned out the chap was about 2 km from my house and was desperate to get rid of it as he had to move this weekend. I also bought a complete manual conversion kit off him that he had never installed and was going to scrap if he couldn't find a buyer, so I am selling this on as I don't need it, check the parts for sale if you want one. Overall this has worked out sweet as there were a number of things missing or toast off my engine, ie oil cap, exhaust shield, belt idler etc. I now have a spare alternator and fuel pump, plus he threw in a whole lot of other shit that will prove useful. The crank looks good, so I guess I could have passed on the Trundles stuff, but maybe I will build this one up properly for later... You might be able to see the snapped conrod in the second pic, he had driven into a river and hydraulic'd it, this is why it was in bits... 13

Popular Post ThePog
Went away in the bus for the weekend so didn't get a lot of time this weekend, just a couple of hours today, but I thought I would chuck the axles on just to get it a bit more mobile...

yoeddynz
Wow. Finally I've caught up on this thread whilst at my parents place with their first world spec bandwidth because everytime I tried to load your cinema sized photos at home the whole of Internets in marahau would crash and I'd get angry phonecalls. Looking good. I'm gonna come out your way for a proper coffee and check out your massive tamiya bruiser kitset you appear to have on your driveway. We visited alister yesterday (he has about 5 different classic car jobs for us since we welded up his bus-I must have done something right He told me about your engine woes. Glad you've sorted it. Fucking top spotting and heads up from @Willdat? Buy that man a beer! Also went for a hoon around allisters farm in one of his safars. Fuck they are big trucks eh. Sounds nice.
ThePog
Yea come out anytime, I'm generally around. It's my stupid phone, it thinks that a stupidly hi Rez camera makes up for it's many other shortcomings. Then I end up uploading to imgur direct from the phone over mobile data as we are also on dialup spec internet here, so I forget about the size... Popular Post ThePog
Yep yep Got the deck back from coating, reassembled most of it and bought a couple of sheets of stuff for the decking. By some miracle two sheets 1220 wide fit perfectly in there, it's almost as if some smart cunt had put some thought into that. Then I spent some time this weekend starting to put the engine back together. Much care was taken, including plastiguaging the bearings to make sure that bit wasn't a fuck up. The only thing I didn't do which I potentially could/should was replace the rings, but the bores looked ok and the rings looked fine. We will see how badly it smokes and how shit the compression is, then I will mask all that with a turbo. I figured I would do a proper rebuild on that other engine once I have some funds built back up, if it is needed... Need to put an oil return into the sump before I seal it up. I might even replace the valve seals if I get excited. Also, every time I go down to the shed I see this, it is evocative....
yoeddynz
Is that ply stuff from the plyguy in Nelson? What's the width?

What's the width? yea, 18mm thick, the sheets are 2440 x 1220mm. Just need to seal the edges if you cut it. Was $80 per sheet as i recall... WhangareiKE70
Formply is what it's called. Primary purpose is for making concrete moulds, the smooth outer surface can have a release agent applied so the concrete doesn't stick. As you can imagine fairly hard wearing. $80 a sheet is a pretty good price. EDIT: I am assuming this as that's what it looks like, correct me if I am wrong.
yoeddynz
Yeah that is a good price. I've bought loads of ply from that fella. Some good hardwood ply. Its all mainly imported and probably made from Orangutan blood but yeah...its cheap.
Popular Post ThePog
Got the engine back together mostly. Fuck I love my forklift. It turns over and everything, I hope it runs.. The chassis is slowly getting bits added, hampered by my family visiting for a week and requiring much eating drinking and building things for siblings bus's etc. I bought some spendy load levelling bags for the rear, coil springs not being great in this respect vs leaf springs. I had to add some feature holes after spending an hour trying to get the inner bolts on the gearbox crossmember, it took 5 mins after that. This disappointed me. The front driveshaft arrangement. The power steering cooler etc. I got a lot of the brackets and stuff zinc electroplated as I found a little man who does this. The only major future expenses are a set of tyres and the turbo/intercooler now, plus a shitload of little stuff no doubt.
kyteler
How'd you get on with a turbs? I have one in the shed that I got from @AllTorque that I think is from a 3.0 Hilux so probably of no use but if it is you're welcome to it.

Still looking, might just chance a kinugawa from Ali for now, I can then spend money on a proper one after the cert. A Hilux one is probably a bit small, but thanks for the offer...

WhangareiKE70
This thread is such a rollercoaster of emotions, I love it and it inspires me for my own Patrol chassis based project, but your work is so much better than mine and you achieve so much so fast... Also makes me want to pull the chassis back apart to have it blasted. But I genuinely don't think I have the time if I want to have it complete on the timeframe I have allowed myself. I'll probably just end up Raptor coating it when I do the tray, and then pouring a whole lot of wax/fish oil or whatever down the chassis rails. Anywho, as you were. 11/10 work.
