Recommended Posts

Im not 100% sure on where steve is, but guessed otara isnt any further away than the back of henderson really, and is right by the motorway so easy to get to, and i could possibly be keen to share in that one...

I did a drive past on both those ones around HVR I posted earlier.

The one at 69 has a weirdo hermit type house behind. It probably has a better sun aspect in the afternoons - better for lighting, good for bbqs.

The one on Woodruffe is probably winner due to the yard, which has greater security appeal.

Without seeing inside, Woodruffe takes a lead.

I'm a bit wary of social gatherings at lockups - that's how my shit started going missing at the last one I rented with other people. Too easy for people to have mates over who bring mates over who bring other mates over and suddenly car covers are being lifted and parts piles are being surreptitiously scavenged.

Not saying visitors aren't allowed, but I would probably only have people over that I trust.

Otara is a bit too far for me, if I was still out in the eastern bays area that would be fine.

Another thing I'm wary about is how secure and/or well-trafficked are the places you guys are looking at? The lockup I rented in Glen Innes had an alarm that had a door sensor AND internal movement sensor and people still tried jimmying the locks, the caretaker reckons it happened from time to time whenever crims drive past and see a "flash car" being moved into a shed.

I just collected some old parts from a person in Takanini.

I spoke to the guy renting the lockup next to his. He hires it out as workshop space and/or car storage.

He's in the process of installing two hoists and a sizable compressor. He also has a whole stack of tools available for use.

He also hires out individual bays for 4 hour sessions if you need some space to do a job on your car.

It's probably too far away for most guys, but I'm sure there's somebody out there who wants space down South.

It's 1-2 minutes away from the Takanini Motorway offramp. The guy lives onsite.

I've got his details if anybody wants to have a chat to him. PM me

Edit: Ed, do you even need a lockup? I thought you have one of your own, in your backyard.

This is what I wish to do as a business but everyone has pooh-poohed it from an OSH/insurance POV.

vaguely OT but relevant;

Back to topic; insurance in a shared shed situation? My insurer holds guy with welder liable if burns down?

I'm not to sure on insurance to tell you the truth. I would guess if your vehicle is insured you would need to disclose its parked location to your insurance co.

My projects are not insured, and I dont intend to until they are driving again.

Contents is another thing with all our tools, but it might just be a gamble we have to take.

I looked at the woodruff place in more detail, it appears quite good. I will find out the alarm situation, but access is gated to the back carpark portion (shared with the nextdoor unit), and the roller door is barely visible from the street front.

I think we'd all need to agree that noone but trusted mates would turn up, and never unescorted. Respecting eachothers property is pretty key to how it all works - again the OSGC mentality should be sufficient.

I have emailed the person with the Woodruff property - asking for a breakdown of the weekly opex costs, quoted at $395pw incl gst and opex. Will follow up with ae85fiend and others to see if we can get another 1 or two cars in there (based on 6 vehicles 3 for me, and 1 each for Ed, Corbie and The Bronze) its a $65 pw split per spot atm. Another 1 or 2 would make it nice and cheap.

the thing i'd be wary of with that one is I think her 10 car count is based on jamming them in there and I think we'd want some wriggle/work room.

Would anyone be keen on external storeage at a cheaper rate? fill up a bit of that unused space and bring down costs.

If you want to tee up a time to look through them I'm free next week.

Bringing this back up for a bit.

There is a workshop me and Cam looked at last year, but deemed it too difficult at the time. It's not cheap, at all, but has live in available. And by that i mean they will let you live there at your own rist as you can technically only stay there on occasion when needed for security of working through the night etc but not as a permanent thing. Word on the street is that thats fine and as long as you're not a loud cunt, you'll be sweet.

To make this the most viable, it would probably require 3 people to want to get a live in workshop, that are quiet people (go to the pub/town if you wanna be a rowdy drunk) that are on a good income as rent will be $250 a week (including a good amount of workshop space) and will also need to get someone like xssteve in to help pay for the rest of the lease by stashing his 3 cars in there also.

It's not the flashest but it's not a grotty old workshop either. Has proper bathrooms and bedrooms and a decent(ish) kitchen and workshop space is pretty sweet from memory.

So, are there 2 other people that would be keen on a live in type dealio that can afford that sort of money? XSSteve, is onehunga/penrose good for you?

There is a good amount of mezzanine area for storage of other types if people want to have some long term storage of a pallet worth of house bits or something? could make rent a smidgeon cheaper again?

Just putting it out there to see what people think really. Seems a bit unrealistic, but who knows, maybe people are keen.

Would potentially be keen on storage of spare parts on mezzanine. Am thinking spare rear 1/4 panel and a few other bits and pieces that I hope I'll never need that are occupying work space atm.
