Bombsquad
So once i again I have another top notch european car with issues, Car is a 95 Audi a4, and problems are plentiful. Firstly central locking is very tempremental, its run off a vacume system, Can anyone tell me what produces the vacume? Is it a pump? if yes where. Secondly, transmission is computer controlled automatic, 90% of the time itll be good as gold, but occasionally you'll start it and put it in gear and i will stick in first and not shift through the rest of the gears. Computer has been replaced recently with a good unit, so is there a sensor or something somewhere that could play up? And lastly sometimes when you start the car it "chugs" runs poorly then stalls when you go into gear as it doesnt have the power to move, I havnt seen it do this but my missus assures me it happens. The really hard thing about these issues is that all happen randomly and seemingly unprovoked so i have no idea whats up with it. Anyone got any ideas? Beaver
im going to say the central locking is due to a vacum leak. mercs run the same system. just check all the vacum lines you can see. google that shit, should be helpful
CaMpylobacter
It's VAG product. sadly all euros get tarred with the brush that seems to be VAG lemon-ness. that's all I know vaccuum will be supplied form the inlet manifold. may be a tank somewhere which 'stores' vaccuum. and hoses throughout the car, with some solenoids. Auto VAG is shit.
Raizer
My guess with the locking is the electrical unit in the drivers door is fucking out. The vacuum comes from an electric pump that should be under one of the seats (from memory it was under the back seat in the older Audi's like 100's, looks like one of those little compressors you get at super cheap) If the design didn't change much from the 80s/early 90s cars then the locking system air lines will be hard green plastic that I doubt will be leaking, although these are joined with rubber vacuum hose (black with green stripe) that could have perished and split. The lines themselves from memory run either in or along the sills then up the A and B pillars.
R100
We just fixed the central lock on an Audi A4 at work last week. They run a vacum pump under the rear seat. Turns out the pump was faulty and its a sealed unit. Not economical to repair. We found a good second hand pump. Total job came to just over $600. The pump was neary $400 on its own. R100
The best thing to do to fix your car is slowly replace everthing until it becomes a jap car.

Bombsquad
Haha yeah I wanted to get a diesel laurel but nooo euros are so in right now. I dont think it has a vacume leak for the locking because sometimes it works fine and other times it doesnt, in theory if it was leaking it would not work all the time. I will attempt to pull apart the drivers door and have a look, because when the locking decides not to work it wont work off the key either
CaMpylobacter
pump under the seat seems so retarded. shit son.
Yowzer
Why do they run vacuum locking? Quieter? Electronic actuator clunks are too annoying for some people?
RUNAMUCK
getting kinda ot, but what is VAG? I always thought vag was an abreviated way of saying pussy. But cunts here say VAG is fail, and pussy is all good.
bubblegoose
vw audi group was down at a vw specialist the other day putting the airbag light out on the passat and giving it more boost, he told me that there are alot/ALOT! of euros coming into the country from japan that have close to double the kms on the clock. this probably explains why they have alot of issues here the passat itself has a odo of 35k and an ecu reading of 52k and yes 90's vag locking systems are shit you will find soon that only the passenger door will open off the key and all euro autos(/all autos) are poos as for the stumbling idle could just need a fault code check and be something simple
Simon
^ Actually VAG stands for Volkswagenwerk Aktiengesellschaft (a.k.a VOLKSWAGEN AG) not VW-Audi Group.

rxsumo
Secondly, transmission is computer controlled automatic, 90% of the time itll be good as gold, but occasionally you'll start it and put it in gear and i will stick in first and not shift through the rest of the gears. Computer has been replaced recently with a good unit, so is there a sensor or something somewhere that could play up? This sounds similar to a issue I've encountered with the auto trans'. Issue with the BMW boxes, is that the clutch packs are made of an "organic material", as the material ages, fibres fall off the clutches find their way into the oil, and no doubt block or partially block the transmissions injectors and solenoids. One of my 535s would lock in first when cold, taking between 2 and 3 kms to start shifting normally, unless the car was idled until it was warm. If you forced an up change, the box selected a neutral position....so no drive at all. All we did is have the trans serviced, flush and filter....Hutt Automatics basically said...no warranty...it could last a week, or years....after 9 months it was still shifting fine. Not sure if it applies to VW, but I'd be guessing the box is a ZF one, so the technology is probably pretty much the same
