I wouldn't bother with the hunter engine. Just because it is slightly bigger displacement doesn't mean it's better.

The hunter engine is basically an old humber/minx engine with an extra main bearing. So it was designed ages ago in the 50s, it is a slant motor and in my opinion you can get more power out of an avenger engine.

For example a '74 hunter GT 1725cc was 79HP and a '75 Avenger GT 1600cc was 81HP. The gap gets even bigger the more you modify the engine.

In argentina they rebadged the Avenger as a Dodge 1500 GT-100 producing 105 bhp. It had the 1800 engine Avenger engine and only two Stromberg carburettors. if that had webers or dellortos it would heaps more.

The Avenger engine was designed from the ground up as a brand new engine. unlike the hunter engine which was a slant engine with pretty much square bore to stroke ratio (81.50 mm × 82.50 mm) The avenger engine was straight upright with a very over square bore to stroke (87.30 mm × 66.70 mm).

If you are keen on repowering your 1300 I could be talked in to selling my old 1500 with the downdraught weber. it went well but nothing like my new engine. If I was you I would do what I did and buy a 1500/1600 and strap a set of Dellorto DHLA40's on it. they go really well with a bit of modification.

cheers man. spent a bit more time today on the carb. think i got it about right. idles nice and smooth and revs a lot more reely. sometimes stalls coming up to an intersection though, usually if I have to pull up in a hurry. new dizzy cap (which the current one is well crap) and rotor will be here this week so might help. although im thinking it is a fuel issue

not to sure yet. am heading away on Thursday for xmas/new years so at the mo just getting this ready for summer cruising. then i shift to wellington and start my life in the big bad world. so no immediate big plans. will see what happens in the new year. will have a decent income so I wont be shy at throwing money into this.

but Im thinking either wide steels of a nice set of period wheels, and suitable low. almost that british "small wheel/small tyre" look that a lot of the escorts etc have going on over there.

i have to look up what ungainly meant....haha

seems my voltage stabilizer in the dash may be faulty.water gauge doesnt work, tested the gauge itslef by earthing it out, works fine. haynes manual says that if the petrol gauge is also faulty (which mine is) it is likely a dud voltage stabiliser. fun times

so how goes the avenger good to see your still chipping away at it,just in case you dont know they are the same stud pattern as ford so you can chose any early ford wheels,i like the lotus steels myself although they only 6" wide,i had set of widend rostyles on a green one i had which looked good although were a bit rough

sorry bout the crap photo they did look good, the mk1 tiger had four spotlamps and had a bracket that bolted to the bumper hanger they are easy to fabricate saves drilling bumpers i mounted my oscars on the green one on a bit of box section bolted between the bumper hangers worked fine and didnt have to mount to body or drill bumpers and they were super steady with a bit of extended hoseclip onto two holes in slam panel.

should have a pic somewere of a green one on superlights i visited in malta ah yes here they are

no probs have heaps of pics from over the years, been to a few of the asoc yearly gatherings and to moffat in scotland nothing like seeing 20 tigers in a row,the avenger engine responds well to a bit of tuning it wont leave a flaming set of 11s behind but they can be fun.mal stuart in the uk is building 1700 engines putting out 190bhp at the flywheel although it costs about 4k sterling to do that....but he is a good source for tuning stuff
