Rekitting AE101 rear calipers

Recommended Posts

The time has come for me to downgrade a part on the Gem! Yes, I'm moving from the EA Falcon discs and calipers on the rear to those from an AE101 Levin.

The calipers I've got are in need of a good recondition. Has anyone done this before? Anyone got a Hanes they can scan? Just wanna make sure I do it all properly.

Cheers

Leon

Don't worry about the SST its a specialist Toyota tool that you don't need. The pistons have a recession in the top you should be able to use a large flat bit of steel etc to twist the caliper out.

The second SST is for removing the hand brake mechanism from the back of the caliper, this is probably not necessary as part of your rebuild if its not fucked/leaking

The main thing with a caliper freshen up is getting the gunk out of the caliper and making sure there is no pitting on the piston/calliper, then chucking in new seals. Then check and grease the slider and change the little rubber boots and its as good as new.

Just chucking it out there - the cost of having a parts shop overhaul them is not much more than the cost of calliper kits..

They are not hard to do but it is super frustrating pulling them apart again when you find you have done something wrong. (and getting the dust seal back in can cause hair pulling of the most extreme kind)

Even though I was a mechanic for over a decade its a job I just CBF with - overhauling rear callipers is something I would just farm out to the local brake shop cos they do them all day errryday - the job may you $150 for both sides including kits - where the kit prices could be $40 a side..

I would at least price up the job and compare it to the kit prices and decide from there if the $X difference is worth the pissing around..

(brake shops also have the ability to test the friction of the handbrake mechanism is up to snuff whereas at home this is not possible)

I'm ready to be flamed for being lazy and not rekitting my own calipers...

Pit Stop? Stuff that, they would be fully amateur at that stuff (AFAIK Pitstop employs what could be best described as journeyman mechanics)- and would most likely farm it out to a specialist brake shop anyway and then just chuck mark-up on it - I would go to a specialist brake shop like Autostop (in Auckland) or ABC (in Wellington)

I got just brakes (in that little street right next to mt smart, kinda opposite where evans european is) to overhaul a rear proportioning valve for me a while back and it was only $80. I had pulled it apart first though but I wouldnt think that would have taken them long. should be not that different. so $150-$200 is possible I would guess.

then again I have done a couple of fiat rear calipers myself and it wasn't that bad, seals were only $10-$20 or so but I did have to reuse the boots as they were NLA.

  • 2 weeks later...

i got a piston spinner tool from repco, well i actually got my wife to go get it.

you are welcome to borrow it.

i was having a nightmare spinning my VW rear pistons, i tried heaps of things, grooved bits of metal, pliers, etc. but the tool was a lifesaver.

it fits on the end 3/8th ratchet

Got the first caliper apart. Don't think I'm gonna bother with the handbrake mechanism bit, seems like a pain in the ass, let's hope I don't need to.

Anyway,

should this rusty rust cause me any concerns? Should I try sand it? Or just clean it and chuck the seals back in?
