Sparkynz Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 Hello engine brains trust! A friend suggested I post here to get an idea of what fault-finding direction to go in, as someone else may have had a similar issue. Any help would be so appreciated before I go pulling all sorts of bits off to even get to the engine. 1996 Toyota Estima, 2.4l supercharged, auto. 350,000 odd kms on the clock. Generally runs beautifully, never misses a beat, well-serviced history. Recently has been running rough on start-up, from 10-20 seconds up to a minute or so max, then smooths out. Generally doesn't happen on hot-starts, sometimes on 'warm-starts', and never once running. The sound is rough/lumpy/uneven rather than a 'popping' or backfiring. More like its only firing on 3 cylinders perhaps? Seems un-related to weather or temperature. Any leads on the direction to go re what may be causing it would be great, it's a tricky wee thing to get access to! Thanks in advance, - 1 Quote
cletus Posted May 7, 2023 Posted May 7, 2023 That will definitely be the supercharger, if you take that off and send it to me I'll get rid of it for you 1 2 5 Quote
ajg193 Posted May 7, 2023 Posted May 7, 2023 Could be head gasket leaking in to one of the cylinders. Any sign of milkshake if you pull the dipstick or look under the oil fill cap? 1 Quote
BlownCorona Posted May 7, 2023 Posted May 7, 2023 pretty unrelated except for the supercharger. but my old supercharged crown was a bit like that (though less extreme) and a new set of spark plugs fixed it. as it transpired, the rear two plugs were ever so slightly harder to change so the last time someone did plugs they just didnt bother with the two rear plugs.... people. 3 Quote
Sparkynz Posted May 8, 2023 Author Posted May 8, 2023 Thanks for the reply - oil & cap look healthy (luckily!) Quote

Good to know! New set of plugs on the way, starting there - fingers crossed! Quote
Bling Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 When were the plugs last done, if the service history is good? 1 Quote
BlownCorona Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 with a username like that, i really hope it turns out to be spark plugs lol the prophecy will be fulfilled 3 Quote
yoeddynz Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 @BlownCorona I can confirm that @Sparkynz bought some new plugs and she's told me it's now running like a sewing machine. 3 1 Quote
BlownCorona Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 YES! just as the prophecy foretold. also im really glad thats all it took to fix it, love it when its something easy! 1 Quote
Sparkynz Posted November 5, 2023 Author Posted November 5, 2023 Wanted to give a little update in case anyone in future encounters this post: Spark plugs helped, but rough running returned (vehicle wasn't used much over winter, so it didn't manifest for a while). It was indeed the head gasket (just minus many of the telltale indicators until it was in bad shape!). Really appreciate all those that offered advice, and hope this helps the next person. 3 2 Quote
yoeddynz Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 I'm going to acquire said Estima from @Sparkynz strip it completely out, remove the front drive so its RWD only, upsize the crank pulley so its sees supercharging boost that would make even @RUNAMUCK sweat and build an Estima Q car. Might change the name too. Seems like a crime to miss out the opportunity to not re-badge it... 'Hot Emina' 5 2 Quote
yoeddynz Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 While I'm here.. would a 63mm silicone hose stretch to 64mm to fit my throttle body? https://stealthride.co.nz/collections/silicon-joiners/products/gloss-black-45-silicone-reducer-expander-hose5mm-wall-thickness-140mm-leg?variant=41522154864811 Quote
