slopez
Hi all, I got some tie rod ends for my valiant from HP in Aus and they don't seem quite right. When inserted into the steering link or lower balljoint, the tie rod taper pushes through to about even with the bottom of the mating part, but the threaded portion of the tie rod stops a bit before the taper, so the nut is reaching the end of its travel and jamming at about the same time as the taper is engaging, so I can't guarantee that its all being torqued together properly (and for one balljoint which is a bit looser it aint even engaging the taper). Does anyone know if its ok to stick a washer under tie rod nut so I can do them up properly? or should I just bin them? Cheers Will
peteretep
If the angles are the same I would probably just chuck a decent sized washer in there, just make sure the ID of the washer clears the taper. Maybe a couple of pics would help
Bling
Sounds like they aren't the right ones? Are they just selling one part for a bunch of different models? Someone else can comment on the washer question, above my pay grade.
Valiant
Sounds like a manufacturing defect or similar, personalty I'd ask for a refund or new tie rod ends. How about some pictures of your Valiant? What model is it?
cletus
It may also be an issue with the bottom balljoint assembly taper being a bit big, have seen some pretty average aftermarket ball joints for valiants It's not uncommon for aftermarket arms to come with washers or tapered spacers to correct taper issues. As long as the taper is the same and the nut doesnt bottom out on the end of the thread it should be ok
RUNAMUCK
Iv was seen a lot of negativ2 rhetoric towards HP on teh Interwebs lately.
slopez
Thanks guys, I think the taper on the rod ends is ok, they stop flush with the face on the steering link, not pulling through or anything. The old ones are threaded up to the start of the taper, whereas these HP are not... HP definitely have that not so great reputation and I don't really feel like 1/2 an hour on the phone to get their opinion . Quote How about some pictures of your Valiant? What model is it? Its a VF Hardtop, I am just piecing it back together after a quick paint (only been 7 yrs!) slopez
Well because pics are king. That's the ball joint, but one side of the steering link is the same and the other side is a bit better. My mechanic is not keen on adding washers so I will do something else. cheers

Bling
Would need to be a pretty fat washer to work, but in theory it's still a solid solution if the taper etc is up to scratch.
slopez
Yeah, I think he is just concerned that the manufacturer doesn't specify a washer why does it need one... etc

Raizer
Washers are fine as long as the taper matches up. Lots of cars have thick washers from factory
