66gt
Hi all. Anybody know what the go is with banded steel rims and certification? I have a new project in the wings and want to widen 13x5 steel rims to 13x8. With a 3" band oldschool style. Anybody know someone that still does this? Years ago most engineering shops would do it. a.craw4d
They can be certed but they need to be done by an approved engineer/ wheel modifier. I'm very slowly in the process of getting approval to do this work but won't be for a while yet. Elite in Christchurch do them. OK priced too.
Threeonthetree
Steel Surgeon in Manukau widen steel rims all the time. I know that a few members on here have had work done by them so just waiting for them to chime in with actual first-hand experience.

Shakotom
Steel surgeon in manukau Have had multiple sets made by him. Ranging from 2 in wider bands to 4in wider Super duper quick turnaround Balanced perfectly No need to run tubes -no leaks from welds No runout or viabrations when being driven And barrels were finished to the point you couldn't tell (unless you removed the tyre) that they'd been cut and widened 12/10 would trade again

Sparkle
I paid something like $120-150 a rim for steel surgeon. So wasn't cheap. That was widened and centres moved. Very very good finish as Tom says above though. This was roughly 3 years ago?
