Threeonthetree
To prime the oil pump on a Holden V8: Â - Unbolt the oil pump from the engine - Pack the pump full of petroleum jelly. Not grease etc. Petroleum jelly will melt easily and dilute into the oil. Grease has a much higher melting temperature and will not mix properly at all. Some people recommend grease over petroleum jelly. They are stupid. -When packing the pump, cover both the drive gear and the driven gear all the way to the brim of the face that mounts to the engine block. -Reinstall the pump and fire it up. Â Â You can also prime the pump using oil: Â - With the oil filter and sump full of oil, unscrew the oil warning pressure sender and very slowly pour oil down it until it's full. Â I prefer the petroleum jelly method especially for an unknown engine as I like to take the pump off and inspect it prior to cranking the engine. The oil method works well if it's a known pump and saves you removing it. But not all pumps have the pressure sender in the correct position (yours does).
