yoeddynz
Ahhhh bugger. Weather looks good for Monday but the grunty ute we were going to borrow is now down the coast as as its tree surgeon owner clears up fallen trees. We might well just give it a crack with the Hiace. Might try it out tomorrow for a spin. Really Im just paranoid and the mighty Hiace should be OK (if I sit on 50kph..) The thing is heaps lighter than a car trailer with a car. Anyways- we have got heaps done. More evenings, inc tonight, spent with head torches. Bloody winter hours. Yesterday we went out to the land and man did it tip it down. Seriously the most rain I have seen out here in ages. The Motueka river was almost top of the stop banks. In between the heavier rain where we hibernated in the van, drank coffee or ate sandwiches, we sorted out and cut all the roofing iron to size. Heaps left- enough for a wood shed and the veranda. Sweet. We also cleared the second short entrance way making it wide enough to bring the cabin in. Will have to tie back some of the natives that we certainly dont want to chop. We got back late afternoon and cut more battening plus a large peice of Rimu for the main bed support. I then put in the last insulation for the bed area. We aim to clad the area around the bed first with a load of that thin pine we got from the garage door place. At least this way we will have a cosy bed while we work out what we want to clad the other walls with. Today we put most of the other battens on the outside. They pull into the interior frame work and it pulls the lot up really stiff making the walls feel so solid for what is really quite thin plywood. Then we cut a big hole out of the back and carefully made a frame work and solid fitting door. We want it to blend in and not be to obvious, keeping the lines neat. Its going to be a storage area behind the sofa, which will be sort of under the bed. We can put the gas bottle, garden tools or other bits and bobs out of the way. with out having to cart them inside. A big hole.. Kevin doing the inspection.. The outside of the all finished.. Tomorrows jobs include putting the lock in the main door, window frame work, get trailer light board working on hiace, sanding the pine cladding. I hope the rain stays away.
Popular Post yoeddynz
Got up early this morning to a clear day. Been a while. We hooked the trailer up after having spent last night emptying it out and filling the Sentra up with all the tools. Drove a longer way out so avoiding the busy roads and kept it all cruisy like. On the Richmond bypass I had my foot flat to the floor and I wound it up to the giddy height of about 70kph. [/url] Got to the base of the main hill and thought 'here we go'. But so fuss at all- it cruised up the hill fine (in second gear..) Arrived happy as so sat in the sun having breakfast and coffee. The we started to clear the last of the gorse and stuff that was in way of getting the cabin up to the next terrace level where we want to set it up for now. We had to move about 20 waterlogged telephone poles. Cant wait to sort them out.. When I tried towing it up the van just couldnt get enough traction as the ground was crazy muddy and water logged from all the rain over past two weeks. The trailer then got stuck in some very soft, spllppery mud But we got it out. Then we put the roofing on and left for home.

yoeddynz
Cheers guys. Wish we could have got it up to the next terrace. Oh well. Kick up the bum- we have been putting off getting some hardstanding down. Our farmer neighbour has his own marble quarry and a 12 tonne digger etc. Will get him over soon and get a proper surface down. Probably do the driveway too so next time yowser visits he wont get stuck. There has been a huge amount of rain here but we want to be able to cope with that in the future. yoeddynz
Yeah crane idea! but nah- I want a lovely big hardstanding pad. Apparently crushed marble works well and sets down hard. I think the marble for parliment house came from around the corner. useless factoid number 1. This weekend plans are to fit the windows in and make a bed frame. I also want to slaughter those willows and the hawthorns nearby. Not liking trees that drop leaves and look all manky in winter. spoil the view. Chainsaw fun.
Popular Post yoeddynz
Update time. I can keep these updates happening if you all find it interesting? We went out on Anzac day towing a trailer packed with flax bushes that a workmate gave us. Van was slow- flax heavy! We spent the afternoon putting up the pine cladding around bed area then made a bed frame. We were both looking forward to getting the burner in the following day.. So we just wore more clothes and blankets. Bed was a inflatable matress and foam matress on top for mega thick, bouncy cushtyness. Sat morning and beautiful clear sky. Set to work while coffee still in blood and cut a big hole out of the wall and fitted the big main double window. Then I fitted a lock to the rear storage box. Then we drank beer. I then cut a hole in the roof, we picked out some rimu from the pile and made a base for the burner to sit on. Fitted burner. Then before it got dark we cut another hole in the kitchen wall and fitted the kitchen window in place. We had bought a LPG califont and 12V water pump. I cobbled these together onto a peice of ply and hooked it up to the water pipe that comes from up at the springs at the southern end of our property. It was now a cold clear evening and Hannah got to have first shower under a Kanuka tree. Then me. Lush. Hot hot shower under the stars. Sweet. Then into the cabin and get that little burner cranking. Time for a bottle of wine. Got it cranking just a little... Its a nice looking little burner but not efficient even compared to the gas bottle burners that I have made quite a few of. It cant be closed down properly and the heat gets pulled through too quick. But it was free and it still works. Cosy. Sunday morning I boxed in the storage box and a mate Dave (avenger tiger) turned up and helped me move all the telephone poles out of the way. This now meant we could properly clear the area then start chopping down the Willows and Hawthorn trees. Hannah got a big fire going and we drank beer in the sun while burning branches from trees that I got to lop down with mr Stihl. This was all good fun. The area is looking better and better. Such a transformation from the overgrown scrubby area it was when we bought it. Before dark (and the rain) we planted all the flaxes up the fence line. Really happy we scored them as they look a heap better than staring at an old fence and corrogated iron against it. We will plant heaps more natives around the same area and select the right bushes/trees to hide the neighbours shed over time. Realised as it rained hard that flue has not yet got a cover. Searched through pile of junk and metal that we have found in long grass and found a ideal rainstop... This weekend will be more tree felling and burning. Just bought another chainsaw- a bit bigger. Very much looking forward to being out there and will be so nice to just turn up and just put the shopping away. We have bought a secondhand matress so no more squishy airbed. Also taking out some old rimu draws I bought a few years back. Will hopefully be getting some Redwood cladding so we can complete the wall linings then put up a ceiling.
CaMpylobacter
definitely keep the updates coming. also, you guys are doing awesomely with clearing out the unwanted stuff. awesome work! on the topic of the cabin: I am insanely jealous but also delighted for you guys with how awesomely you've done. That said, I can't say I'm surprised how lush it's turning out. You guys are consistently awesome!
yoeddynz
Awww shucks Cam. You make me blush. As always the offer of cups of tea etc are always there. When its a bit more sorted you must come over and stay a weekend. I shall ply you with beer in return for blackberry and gorse removal. Yeah we are stoked with how quickly its clearing. When we very first looked at the land around end of last winter/spring it was soooo overgrown and really put us off. Then we found the track up to the ridge and saw the view up there. That sold it to us. Plus we got it at an awesome price and the seller is really cool. When we get the bottom area sorted and get a big shed up we can move out. Hopefully before the start of summer. Once we are out there we both really want to build another larger cabin or housetruck for up on the ridge. Its so awesome up there. Great all day sun, amazing views, you cant see any houses or evidence of humans, heaps of birdsong. Its just so lush up there and only about a 10 minute walk up to there. Will make an awesome mtb/walking track through the bush/tree ferns/kanuka groves with a sweet enough gradient that a granny could ride her bike up there. A view from the ridge...

yoeddynz
Cool- Always welcome Chris. I actually wouldn't mind a mini meet in summer so we can do another weekend of runs up the Takaka hill/swims/sun/beer etc but need workshop shed sorting first. Bling
Looking good guys, quality as per usual. If you need a cowl for the fire I can keep an eye out at work if you let me know the diameter. 100mm? Would just need to cut the top off the flue.
