punkoutnz
I've actually been offered a Weber for it, has been tuned for a 1600 though so not sure what would be involved in returning it. Also stripped and cleaned my carb today and bled the brakes, car now pulls up straight and with a much better feel in the pedal, front left had heaps of air in it. And no more misfire! Also pulled the centre console out which is ugly as and for now I've used a spare cv boot I had lying around to plug the hole.

punkoutnz
I have compiled a list of bits I wish to require to make this car (more) awesome. Does anyone have one of the following... Parcel tray Door handle surrounds (the square bit that clips on to hold the door card back) Window winder handles (one is bent, another broken) Some form of gear boot that attaches directly to the floor for awesome sexiness An old school tachometer (it has one, but doesn't seem to read very accurately) A ramflow or similar filter so I can ditch the loose fitting factory air filter Extractors for a crossflow engine Any kind of upgrade shock (bilsteins, etc. No coilovers) An interior light fitting (this one has fallen apart) I think that's the uber list of things I wish to acquire over the next few months. There are other things, but those are the main ones I want. Have also chosen a colour to paint it, which will remain somewhat secretive until I get drunk and blab it to everyone who doesn't already know. I believe I also have a painter lined up (unless someone can recommend someone else awesome) when the truck sells it'll be going straight in for a good lick of paint. KIRK
^er you forgot to add 12a j port to your list. plz can a moderator sort that out for him?
flyingbrick
Please don't ruin it by putting in super curvy moulded shiny speaker surrounds/ parcel tray. That late 90's show car stuff is ick. Cool car though
punkoutnz
Well it didn't come with a parcel tray, and I really want to put some rear speakers in there for doof doofs and that basically leaves me with either paying an exhorborant amount for a factory parcel tray and putting ugmo speaker spacers on there, or making a nice moulded feature that I can have speakers in. Will vinyl it up. I reckon it'll look pretty good.
camo_78
as long as the vinyl is a matte/satin finish its all good IMO .will be following your work though as i need to do the same in the mk5 sport to fit rear speakers
punkoutnz
General question here... But lets say I want to remove front and rear windscreens (which I do for paint), is that something I can do myself at home or is it a pro only job? Any special techniques? Would I need to replace the seals if I do so (they appear to be in good condition and currently don't leak).
Raizer
Pull the locking strips out of the seals, get in car, push windows out with your feet. Won't need to replace the seals if there any good.
Bling
Some ideas on removal / install in here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/38883-removing-a-glued-in-windscreen/page-2 Assuming the mk2 seals are the same type as mk1.
J-W-G
Yeah easy as job! As raizer said but two people makes it gob loads easier

punkoutnz
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=629192818 Anyone got any thoughts on that? Wondering if it might be a suitable carb to test out on the 1300. I'm no expert with these carby things, I can't find where you plug in the laptop. kyteler
Flag that shit, get bike carbs.
Benno
Yeah, you'll be in for a hard time getting a 32/36 running on a 1300. I rang Murray at Weber specialties, and he basically said that I was an idiot for trying and that you'd never be able to get it running nicely. Regardless I had a go at getting it going anyway, and never managed to get it running nicely and it drunk fuel like nothing else. Bike carbs are probably your best bet. punkoutnz
I thought the 1300GT Escorts came with the 32/36? Bike carbs will be a goer but that wont be until I source a 1600 to put into it (hoping to get something I can rebuild so keeping an eye out for blown motors). I was just looking something cheap short term to spice up this engine, it's got a ford 4 carb on it at the moment.
Benno
Nah, the 1300GT's came with 32 DGVs, which are very difficult to get hold of these days. I'm still rocking the 1300 in mine too, planning on getting a 1600 one day, but for now the 1300 runs well, is cheap on gas and doesn't leak oil. When I get time/money I'll build up a decent 1600 for it. I've been thinking about making up a bike carb manifold for it, once the manifold is made up it will bolt straight up to a future 1600. Jetting would obviously need to be changed, but once you've got the hang of doing it from the 1300 I doubt it would take long/be difficult to redo it for the 1600. punkoutnz
This is true! I did not know that about the carbs, best to find out now rather than later though. Dunno where I got the 32/36 info from then, must have been lost in translation somewhere. I thought I had sorted the miss on mine but it reared its head again today, I still think it's ignition related (probably weak spark due to the crappy points system) so electronic ignition before going further. It's on the list of things to sort once I get back from Ohakune. How far have you looked into the bike carb thing?
Benno
Those accuspark electronic ignition modules off trademe seem to work pretty well, certainly a lot better then points. You can adapt a fully electronic distributor, there's some good info here but those accuspark ones are literally about 30 minutes to install and seem to work great, less mucking around involved. I haven't got too far into it, that was going to be my next project then I ended up buying a motorbike which is taking my time/money instead. From what I had been reading you ideally want 36-38mm carbs to work with either 1300 or 1600 engines, no point going bigger unless running a really wild cam or something. There is some good info here from a guy that did it. Shaneo is probably the man to talk to about it though.
