^^ Yeah. Or a much larger radius'd cam.

Maybe even as big as 30mm radius. The more surface/contact area you use the easier it will be on the rope.

Alternately.

Make the rope go round the cam/stopping device.

The wider the ropes arc the faster it will go and therefore the tighter the arc the slower it will run.

It would be nice to have a bigger surface area but I couldn't find any materials quickly.

If this brake acts agressively and quickly then the rope wear will be confined to short distances. In theory the brake will never get used on a moving sled. It needs to hold the sled static at the surface and also engage if the diver gets chicken and jumps off the sled before he hits the bottom of the rope.
