mk2escort

Recommended Posts

Im new to this and dont no jack about cars so dont cut me down please.

So just got my first car a 1980 4door mk2 escort L and I'v noticed that when I turn it off it keeps spluttering and shakeing around abit for a while (long enough for me to get out of the car and lock it!!) I have been running it on 91 and will put 95 or 98 in it next time but is there anything else i can do to stop this?

Your mixture is probably running to rich you need to adjust and make slightly leaner. What sort of carb is it? If you rev the car up before you shut it off does it run on? (Don't go nuts just blip the throttle and as the revs drop away kill the ignition)

overrun can be caused by multiple things

: high idle - turn it down, wind the idle screw on the throttle linkage about quarter of a turn anti clockwise

: too rich - lean it out, wind the idle mixture screw at the base of the carb clockwise half a turn

: too far advanced - retard the timing, loosen the distributor and turn the distributor about 2 mm the direction that the rotor turns

: carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber glowing - decoke it, take the vacuum hose off the distributor (it goes from the carburettor to the distributor) and put itin a 600ml bottle of water and rev the engine to around 4000rpm and let the water be sucked into the engine

: too much compression - can't do anything and if the motor is stock it won't be this

failing the ability to understand these, you will need to pay/bribe a knowledgable person to perform said tasks

there are a combo of things that it could be so on second thought it would be better to let someone look at it

had a problem with the minor running on and being a pig till high revs

The mechanical advance weights had gunked up and frozen in a well advanced position - once cleaned it was fine.

carbon/decoking probably isnt the problem - slam a couple of cups of meths in the fuel tank next time you fill up and itl get sorted

Try 98 or 96 before doing anything. I find my Capri runs like shit with 91 Octane but problems all go away with high octane.

My Thoughts

Try Higher octane - if this works stick with it or adjust timing to suit lower octane.

Running too lean also causes run on doesn't it as a lean burn is hotter.

Retarded timing gives run on as late combustion is more likely to heat up the carbon deposits on or near your exhaust valve.

Don't mess with the mixture until you've done timing as it is unlikely your mixture is suddenly incorrect.
