im pretty shure the 1300 and 1600 boxes are the same, unless youre talking rs or mex or something

dunno bout speeds tho coz ive always ran a 5speed and never had a speedo

Nah. 1600 boxes from the Sport and Ghia are different to the normal escort box. They are still type 2, but they are closer ratio boxes - e.g. 3.3 1st gear. You can tell the difference as they have a remote extension (the aluminium bit with the tail shaft and gearstick) that is a single casting. The normal escort boxes have a steel tube for the selector.

They have the same size bearings, but the gears themselves were uprated.

I can take a photo if someone wants, I have both sorts.

Sierra box, the type 9 one is disapointing on a 1300 - you need a 1600 really, even better with a high torque cam.

Kris.

A std sport/1600 with a 3.54 diff can almost do 100k in 2nd. Mine can, but it's pulling somewhere around 7000 rpm - I hope your engine is well built before you try this...

I only just got my esky sport (1600), but the guy prior said he has had it to 220km through a 5 speed sierra, sound realistic??

Im thinking not I had a mild 2l on a 3.5 diff and 200kph was top speed on a long straight with a tail wind. But then you dont know till u try aye. 8) But you shouldnt go trying those speeds anyway. Not in a nort unless your on a track or sumthin.

standard 1600sport with slightly higher tyres (185/70r13 etc) with a 0.82 5th gear will top out at about 220 (@5800rpm ie. standard) pushing it to that point wont be easy going though..

approx. redline for the zetec was given to me to be 7300.. if i could shove it that high in 5th id be pushing nearly 280.. which i will never try to get close to.

i must say doing 155 in my car was done from miles to kms as my speedo only goes upto 140kph plus i have different wheels so very possible i was doing less, also i was reading a magazine a couple of weeks ago that was looking at car speedos and it said that a new ford falcon was actually doing 94 when the speedo says it was doing 100 so who can really trust their speedos unless they get a proper speed tester or something

Pretty difficult discussion here. I would expect a 1300 to be able to rev above 5800 especially if it had a bit of kit on it.

Ratios as I remember them:

5.4 Don't know what from but sometimes used in 1300 rally cars

5.1 Common rally ratio and used in the works cars but that was in the Atlas diff

4.9 Aussie ratio that wears out quickly

4.4 Anglia van ratio

4.1 Anglia ratio originally

3.9 Escort ratio

3.5 Escort sport and cortina

My rally Escort had a 4.4 diff and a 2000E gearbox which was out of the Corsair and a semi close ratio. It was later changed for a Rocket close ratio box.

All I remember was that it would do around 95MPH in third at 8500rpm and 114. something in top at 8000rpm. That was on 195/70 13 rears.

My current Alfa Romeo 1700 will pull an easy 110Ks in second and a 195Ks in 4th (It's a five speed) so the numbers don't seem too out of the way to me. Having said that a 1300 would have to be modded to pull anywhere near a Ton(inMPH)

Regards Eddie

Eddie i have a question...

i have just put a 1600 with a lumpy cam ported head and better valve springs into my car which was a 1300 manual... it has a standard diff in it which is a 4. something i think... it goes well but 1st seems pretty pitiful and revs out quickly and doesn't pull as hard as i think it should.. the rest of the gears are good...

I have a 3.54 rear end from an auto 1600 ghia.. do you think i should put the diff into my car?

Cheers

Jeremy

Thats bullshit man, you miss calculated somewhere or forgot to add something into the equation.

To be honest with you Jerm, that diff wont change much with your first gear. You would be better off to sell it. It wouldnt suit your setup very much

there you go jerm straight from the man himself! so hurry up and sell me that diff!!
