escort gears

calculate this for me atropine... standard escort 4th gear, 13 inch 60 prof tyres, 3.56 diff, 8000rpm

well to start ya need to be more specific on tyres. profile is based on the width of the tyre, so a 185/60r13 is smaller than a 205/60r13.

a 185/60r13 has a diameter of 21.74inches, a 205/60 is 22.69inches (http://www.net-comber.com/tirecalc.html) times this by 25.4 (to get it into mm) equals 552.196 and 576.326. now i think i miss something there.. i think my working out puts them a little high.. 205/65r13 is rated at 560mm on spannerfodder yet i get 595 through that.. 1.06544 is my miracle number right now..

all my speed working out is done on http://spannerfodder.com/the_works_escorts-ratios.php,..

so..

8000rpm

1.000:1 gear (4th)

3.56:1 diff (3.54?)

or 205/60r13 tyres

=227.5 or 242.8kph.. going by my old way (242) or the new way with the miracle number.. (227)

either that or the calculator on spannerfodder is incorrect. which i doubt. or i could of fucked up the tyre calculation.. which is very possible.

btw i have 185/70r13s on my sport and 195/60r14s on my 4dr. both come to approx. 590mm (thru the old way.. without the miracle number.. how i came up with the old speeds.. so escorta your right im probably a bit high.. gonna work with my miracle number now..) my tyres are now 555mm instead of 590..

with that number the prior workout of approx 220kph is now 208kph. more accurate?

"redline for the zetec was given to me to be 7300.. if i could shove it that high in 5th id be pushing nearly 280.. which i will never try to get close to."

with new tyre size, 280 drops to 260.

anyone confused?.. i wonder if using 1.06544 is actually correct or im just deluded myself.. its close anyway

Hi Jeremy, this IS me this time, but I'd have to say that I think you'd get a hell of a lot more satisfaction from your mods by mating your motor to a Sport type box and keep the acceleration. Then you would have a more balanced package but thats only a personal opinion.

The higher the diff ratio the more it has the feel of spacing the gearbox ratios apart and vice versa.

atropine:

the standard 2lt diff is 3.54:1 - 1.6lt is 3.77:1

im pretty sure the sport and the 1600/1800 rs escorts had 3.54s (mk2 atleast..).. the rs2000 cant be the only escort with a 3.54.. and if my sport had a 3.77 itd top at 160@5800 (going by the new calculation of tyres.. 170 by the old means) and ive had her higher than that..

e49 val chargers did like 70 or 80 in 1st.. and the best thing i found..

a replica company in oz, e.r.a, one of the gt40 replicas they made, could do just under 100mph in first  like atleast 150, in 1st.. wonder what the acceleration was like..

some of the early pacers and the like only had 3 speed gearboxs first gear was quite tall and could easily do that

got to 170 in my 1300, took ages through and i was shit scared as the esky was bouncy around the road.

well if it was standard it cant.. with a 3.54 its possible.. a 5spd maybe.. either that or a very high revving 1300

As I think Atropine is trying to say politely, top speed is determined by horsepower not diff ratios. A stock 1300 simply doesn't have the horsepower to pull an Esky over 100mph no matter what a speedo might show. However a good modded 1300 will but not by a lot. !300s generally need a lot of revs to make decent HP and therefor a lower diff ratio will give a better chance of a higher top speed.

Yea, the only 1300, 4spd I know of thats pulled any speed up round there is my cousins mk1 sport. The motors been worked.. its been blueprinted, lightened flywheel, lumpy cam, port n polish, fully balanced, thats off the top of my head anyway.

It pulled 160 no problem, was doing a fair amount of revs, but its a really well-built motor so it sounded fine ie. not like its about to blow up  the car felt really stable at that speed too.
