dabuzz
Probably been covered, but cant find answer I'm looking for. Pulled my hilux diff out, (G-series) Question 1- am I correct its a 4 pinion LSD?- both wheels spin same way, I'm not sure what I'm looking at through the window. Question 2- currently it's 4.3, I was given some 4.88 which I want to fit, but noticed that the 4.88s are 5-6mm thinner on the crown wheel. Are they interchangeable? Is the thinner crown from non lsd maybe, so I'd need non lsd bearing and crush tube etc?
cletus
Yes it is a 4 pinion, you can see the ends of the pins x4 in the carrier on most diffs, the carrier is the same offset and the difference is in the gearset, ie the ring gear might be thinner but the pinion gear is a bigger diameter to change gearing. Which doesn't really make sense in your situation, a 4.8 would have a smaller diameter pinion, not bigger I would think I am not a hilux diff expert though so someone else might know 100%
RUNAMUCK
@johnny.race is a diff guru no?
kpr
4.88 hilux diff is different carrier to all the others. so you need the 4.88 specific carrier to run them. unless they are aftermarket gears. you can get a 4 pinion non lsd. but that looks like a lsd, although they are pretty rubbish at being a lsd 2

Cheers
RXFORD
I concur as Clint and Kpr said that its a 4pin Lsd. 5.29 carriers will also work with the 4.88 gearset, but those ratios are a bit harder to find. Its just a slightly different pinion location which is a bit dumb considering its still the same code and spline count. You could ask around on the offroad pages to see if anyone has a fucked 4.88 or above diff you could use the carrier from. I'm not sure what I have lying around, they are all buried in my container, but next time I'm in there I'l have a look.
johnny.race
Oof, late to the party. That pic up in the first post is a 4 pinion/non LSD as correctly stated by those up above in the know. The LSD version is also a 4 pinion (which as alluded to above) but is a different (though sorta similar looking) carrier.
dabuzz
Non LSD!!! well that fucks my day

Would you be able to explain the difference, if I was to find an LSD centre what i need to look for as you said they look very similar, just so I don't end up buying the same thing again because a seller doesn't know what they have - thanks
Nominal
This is an LSD centre (or better be), it's an old pic I have stored online. Currently it is bolted into a housing.

dabuzz
Thanks- that's good info, I'm still thinking mine is LSD as it has this same plate inside, I've seen others that you can see straight through to the other side when
johnny.race
Sorry bud, I put you wrong. I was out of the shed and after awhile they all start looking the same. Anyway this pic shows 2 x Hilux diff heads. The one on the l/h side is a LSD. The one on the right is a 4 Pinion. Both are 4 Pinion but only the LSD one has the frictions and steels. That's why the carrier is bigger/fatter (like meee!) This is the LSD one. See how close and minimal gap there is between the carrier and the bearing cap? Compared to this one which has a bigger gap because the carrier is smaller. Both have those windows in the housing making them look similar. 3
