Crispen Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 So the scort has started making a strange noise. Almost like something is continuing to run when it shouldn't or is wearing out. Have made a couple of videos in links below. 1 of the noise in the engine bay and one inside the car whilst parked. (Makes same noise when moving, until clutch is engaged and revs drop) I'm running standard 4spd g box, and a moderately worked 1.6 (rebuilt 12,000kms ago).. hope the videos help.. Cheers -inside car -engine bay Quote
Nominal Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Does it change if you put your foot on the clutch? Quote
sleeektoy Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 ^^ that's the first thing i would ask too.(sort of mentioned in your post) Loose flywheel?, clutch or pressure plate damage? pull the starter motor and take a look inside the bellhousing edit - pilot bearing gone on the back of the crank? Quote
Crispen Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Yeah it goes away when clutch is engaged but only because revs fall. If I hold at a steady 2500rpm it will hang around. Almost sounds like something is swinging...? Quote
Nominal Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Thrust bearing? Loose fan? Water pump bearings expiring? Throwout maybe? Quote
Crispen Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Thrust bearing is 12000kms old. Water pump brand new at rebuild and will check fan.. what's throw out? Quote
Raizer Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Throw out bearing is the bearing on the clutch fork that disengages your clutch. I've had thrust bearings go pretty quick in a rebuilt escort 1300, grab your crank pully and see if you can pull/push your crank. Quote
Crispen Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 So throw out and release bearing are same same? Fans bolted on tight and couldn't get crank pulley to shift... even when twisting fan around.. Quote
bigmatt4 Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Crank hitting sump maybe 1300 sumps foul on 1600 engine just a thought Quote
Crispen Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 So took starter out today and nothing is loose in behind. Put my ear to engine and tried to pin point the noise..sounds like its coming from fan area and was wondering..could it be the alternater on its way out/ already out? Would a worn bearing or something inside of it contribute to the noise? Quote
AllTorque Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Take the fan belt off, start it up and see if the noise disappears. 2 Quote
Raizer Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Remove fan belt and see if the noise goes away, if it does it's either alt or fucked water pump. /What he said 2 Quote
flyingbrick Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Iv seen a shit fan blade that would pull forward with revs and scuff radiator. Quote
Crispen Posted June 5, 2016 Author Posted June 5, 2016 its the alternator! took belt off and noise fucked off as well. thank god its just that and not something much worse.. scort goes down to hamilton to get the twins put on her this week and now a new alternator! happy days at least it wasnt somethng worse.. 1 Quote
two_days_late Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Good trick for pinpointing noise in future is to grab a cardboard roll from some paper towels etc and hold it to your ear while moving around components Quote
