Sammy
Just had new exhaust made up and fitted at pitstop now the car wont fire up. Any ideas? they seem too think its a faulty ignition switch
KKtrips
Did they weld up the exhaust with the battery still connected? Could have fried the ignition module or computer if they did.
Brock-Lee
We're going to need a few more symptoms than that. Does it turn over and just wont catch? Does it just click and nothing else? Does it do nothing at all? /bash the starter motor and check the inihibitor switch for the trans
kyteler
Yeah, if there's no power there at all when you turn the key then it's likely a fuse or something blown.
shizzl
check your main fuse... itll be either 80 or 100amp... it probably died after 20+ years
Sammy
Sorry for lack of info, Dash lights and headlights work but when you turn the key theres nothing not even a *tick*
Goat
As dayfe said. If its an auto, its probably inhibitor switch on trans. Mash it through the gears a few time and try and start. Also try starting in neutral. Or if its a converted manual, whatever was used to bypass the inhibitor switch has probably come loose etc. If neither work, could be the starter relay. Check this by googling where it is on your specific car. Replace if necessary.
Sammy
its auto, Starter should be fine as it was replaced a year ago Thinking the ecu might be dead.
Yowzer
Unlikely. These engines still crank with the ECU disconnected (I think, someone please confirm)
Goat
Should crank over fine. As ECU takes a pulse from the engine turning over to function.... Starting circuit is simple. Key -> inhibitor -> relay ->starter. Starters usually click if they are tired. If you are getting nothing it implies there is nothing reaching the starter. The problem will either be the key, inhibitor or the relay. See if you are getting voltage (when you turn key to start) to the one and only small wire that goes to your starter motor. But this is an 80's toyota. So god knows whats actually going on.
Spencer
Yea I don't even think they have a relay, just full voltage through the key and inhibitor on the gearbox. Yea just going to have to do some diagnosis and chase where you have power/no power. Factory manual will help greatly in figuring this out, there is a 5mge celica one on the net will do the basics. Yowzer
I had the full engine wiring diagram on my computer somewhere, but I can't currently find it. Also can't remember which computer it's stored on.
Yowzer
This may help though https://docs.google.com/file/d/1hiqkZMGlqX2GktidHnCWCw0N1ZmrzMzDlltbktS5nzRZURoddQTGOqDDhRJ6/edit?hl=en&pli=
Spencer
Its on the interwebs. http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK2/default.aspx Its annoying and page by page but its there, used it and it crosses over to the 5mge waka pretty well. Go read up about toyota starting systems on autoshop101 as well they run through fault finding I am pretty sure.

Sammy
Update: apparently the wires behind my battery shorted out somehow and the main power wire needs replacing. this is what the sparkie told me
