NicT
We bought the exact same oil cooler for the carina. Seems like a good idea until u try and fit it somewhere, then u are just left stroking ur chin going "hmmmmm" Looks cool but practicality is thrown out the window. My biggest fear is hitting something and busting the cooler, then there goes your engine (which is usually pretty nice if you justified buying an oil cooler for it other then looks). ProZac
Hmmmm, with the atom are you planning to run the stock mitsy idle control stepper motor under the throttle body? It'll use up all 4 aux outputs. If you run wasted spark you could repurpose two of the ignition drives to do fuel pump and fans... But might be better to do a 3wire Bosch idle valve instead of the integrated mitsy one?
mjrstar
Not to sure on the idle control, my starlet isn't too bad idle as it has nothing in the way of idle up function hooked up and, the stepper in my evo doesn't do an awesome job with the mild camshaft upgrade, so yeah maybe just flag idle control and set throttle body accordingly / will be a bit of a try it and see... The old mill got a bit of a workout - after some adjustments on the bed to firm up the slides.. Oil cooler has now been given a home.. Hoping to do some bumper mods and maybe a bit of a front lip along with some decent ducting to improve front end airflow. Also some progress was made on the scratch built thermostat housing, water fitting for the rear of the head and mods to the water pump.... but more on that another time.
mjrstar
Only minor shed progress this weekend. Messed about with the dump pipe Shifter tuned up so tacked up a bit of a rough (ok very rough) trial for proof of concept.. Yes it does work using the subaru steering column universal but shift feel is extremely poor. I think either universal orientation and pivot height need a lot more development...

mjrstar
Container landed so we now have these... They feel great and apperar to be double adustable on the damper. Rears run a semi detached canister and clear the outer cv boots which is a bonus. Pretty good build quality so at this stage they look to be worth the punt The tig master paid a visit so some bourbon was consumed and some bits nicely glued together. Also had to hoon out the dump pipe merge hole before it received a mixture of tig and arc welding to hit the hard to reach places.. Also some progress was made on the coolant route from the back of the head and lower radiator.

mjrstar
Got some more of this done... And a peek at the head coolant getter outerer.. Pulled the cams out and the lifters etc then reinstalled the cams to do a banana check. . They spin over nicely which is great...
mjrstar
The cooling system is now all but sorted... Looks like the toyota flexi plate is going to work with the de-ring gear'd gtr flywheel. Just needed the snout trimmed down on the starter and maybe 8-10mm spacing of the starter... I think the bush should stay put..
mjrstar
Engine bay looks like this New engine looks like that. . Parting shot.
mjrstar
Managed to whip up a bit of a stone /finger cover for the lightening holes in the adaptor plate... Then decided I should try and stack up the flexi-plate / flywheel combo. ( I need to sit the starter about 6mm forward to get clearance / good ring gear engagement) it's not the simplest arrangement linking the mitsi crank with the toyota flexi and Nissan flywheel.. the GM hydraulic release bearing will complete the combo when it arrives... It then made sense to slam gearbox on and stand back / admire the masterpiece Although that couldn't happen until I made this thing about that much shorter. like so Now for that standing back
mjrstar
Finished off the engine mounts last night, nothing flash but should do the trick... Also cracked on with slicing the trans tunnel to make room for the exhaust.. doesn't need much just a few hunderd mm where it sneaks up over the gearbox mount.. Furai
Looking pretty good man! You are always powering through with your build, cant wait to see her going! What brand are the coilovers? I must have missed it somewhere
mjrstar
hey the coilovers brand are "augment" i'm not sure about much other detail other than visible and feel build quality seems to be very good (on par with my arogosta units i have in my evo). My google skills are not that great so have not been able to find out much more about the mystery suspension.. They might be somewhat linked to rs aizawa??? Hey if anyone else knows aythign about the brand i'm keen to hear..
Furai
I have never heard of them, where did you get them from? I have just been on Minkara, Yahoo auctions, Maruha, Car Make Corns and RS Aizawas website and cant find anything on them! If the quality is similar to Aragosta they must be top notch. mjrstar
Spacer for the starter. ..and bell housing cover plate. . Have ben hanging out for a while now to try Maori vertical lathe styles.. seemed like a good opportunity. . Also applied mig to trans tunnel where massaging occured to add exhaust clearance over the gearbox mount... Looks like a bit of a battle wound but should tidy up ok.
