I'm at least 3% sure that the lights don't need to be factory issue, my mx5 has a modified mr2 license plate light because i relocated it to the bumper and it has passed a wof a few times now.

 

As long as the plate is sufficiently illuminated I wouldn't see what the problem is?

Not too sure sorry, i just extended the wires from the original plate lights down to the new lights so they flicked on with the headlights etc.

 

You can buy number plate bolts with LED's in them, could be a go?

you can use any piece of shit light to light up your number plate as long as it turns off and on with your lights, its white light and doesn't shine backwards
