tregath
Just saw the new supercheap mailer and saw the 50% off 3m paint range, im guessing they are bringing in a new range? Has anyone used this for painting a complete car? Im about a year away from painting, how long does it keep? Am I Best to wait or grab the lot now and store it? And approx how much paint would be needed for a mk1 escort 2 door?
1ton
Half-price new paint is a sweet deal alrite. Sorry cant help with all your questions but I was also wondering how many litres do you need to paint a med-large car (I know roughly how many spray cans it takes lol). Seedy Al
paint will keep for ages. Just keep turning the pots over every so often I claim 4 litres of paint to paint any vehicle besides a van is the best to go off.
Gaz
Yeah I got a whole heap of stuff yesterday, mainly bog $16 1kg, applicators $3 a pack, etch primer $9 a can, high temp paint $11 a can... cheap as. Ive never used 3m paints before but going by the name it must be ok stuff. All paints differant on how well it covers thats what really determines how much you need, but yes, 4l will be enough. Spencer
I personally wouldnt touch their paint and the bog is pretty shit Gaz. Good brand stuff will be just as cheap especially if you can get a trade discount or something.
QCADTA
yeah i just got some z-grip, 3ltr tin for $35.50 i like it, so easy to work with, goes on like butter and easy sanding. Got some cheap thinners from supercheap though.
Spencer
Bulk thinners from the paint store is usually 10 times cheaper than the auto stores. Shit I will try and avoid all of their paint products these days, more expensive and second rate
mjrstar
Just saw the new supercheap mailer and saw the 50% off 3m paint range, I would suggest avoiding this stuff, pay a bit more fore Resene etc..
Gaz
I personally wouldnt touch their paint and the bog is pretty shit Gaz. Oh gutted, thought that 3m was a decent brand, maybe just for masking tape lol. Oh well no real loss as havnt used it yet. Drums of thinners is way cheaper but you def get what you pay for in gloss levels ,i.e 2 way AAA etc. Gaz
civic_zr
I personally wouldnt touch their paint and the bog is pretty shit Gaz. Good brand stuff will be just as cheap especially if you can get a trade discount or something. x2 I've only had bad experiences with both the paint and the bog. My 2c, the horrid australian export thats $3 a can on trade is better than the 3M spray cans. Also the bog seems to always give a million pin holes. bubblegoose
the paint is as good as the price reflect and the bog is ok but needs to be sanded as soon at its gone off as it turns to granite over night. if you are going for a repaint its worth investing in good paint as buying cheap stuff will satisfy you for a few months till its starts to dull, fade and chip. not ripping into the 3m brand as its generally good shit but if you want long lasting results then its not the paint you are after
bubblegoose
@gaz the etch and hi temp stuff is actually pretty good shiz
Spencer
Yea 3m make other bog gaz, never used it but I'm sure they have lush shit. I just hate working with that supercheap shit and rage gold or something is cheaper
danger
I'm gonna assume 3m make low cost paint budget paint as they'd be fighting up hill to beat PPG/Dupont who are well established in the OEM quality market. I'm assuming they would be their biggest oppposition anyway. 3m have the accessories market cornered with tape, respirators etc and imagine they're going into the type of paint that sells in non-paint-trade places like supercheap etc where 3m will already have accounts and the other specialised brands wont. So I'm guessing they'll just have a range of basic solvents and cheap/easy 1k enamels/ cheap metallic basecoat arcrylic systems that "don't require a clearcoat" ie shit and not very durable. I actually buy the supercheap 4L GP thinner when its 2 for one or dirt cheap as I just use it for gun cleaning and CBF'd filling my 20L /I dont know what I'm talking about. 1ton
Bought the 3M masking tape and it seems real thin and not very sticky compared to other ones Ive tried so I wont be buying it again. Got a 4L tin of 3M hammer-finish spray paint for $60 and its actually good stuff though I still reckon you get what you pay for, if you buy cheap stuff dont moan if its not the best quality. danger
Bought the 3M masking tape and it seems real thin and not very sticky compared to other ones Ive tried so I wont be buying it . What colour was the tape? The green stuff is designed not to be too sticky so it doesnt tear fresh paint or leave residue
flyingbrick
I used some blue 3m tape the other day and I'm sure that was labled as being low tack and zero residue or something. It sure as hell didn't stick that well... good enough as masking tape but certainly not good enough for anything else.
jtkp61
I work for Supercheap, its now blocked and theres not much left. Its real cheap now, even when not on sale. Good time to stock up - I have haah
NickTheFox
Which store do you work at? I just got one at the alicetown store. Also has anyone tried the new septone range that is replacing the 3m paint.
Testament
We went through this about a year ago basically I think 3M wanted a cut of the market or wanted some associated bits of the paint factory or whatever - so for some reason bought out septone or whoever it was so all that 3m paint etc. at supercheap is just the same junk they had before but with a 3m label on it. if you look on the official 3m website you wont find a dickie bird about those products.
