ChickInSteelcaps
about bloody time you signed up Ness, its Ryan with the ceffy, gtb and escort van on the wiring front, what ya need done?? Thanks guys! haha hey ryan, your lovely gf told me to come here, finally made it! the fuel/temp gauge crapped out a while back, went to e.parrot & sons, they fixed it, few days later i took it to work for the first time, on the way home, i lost fuel/temp/oil press/speedo/rev gauges.. it had been suggested by someone else it may be a wiring fault somewhere, figured maybe even if it's not, that new wiring wouldn't be a bad idea for the wee min. needs the gearbox fixed too, (among other things lol) mechanic in chch said at least $2k, mechanic in hinds, just about choked on his cuppa, and said "oh bollocks to $2k" bugger tho, cos he's just up and left edit to add: sorry... i did edit original post.. i'm in christchurch but happy to travel to a degree
Ranter
Re guages: speedo is driven by cable so it must have stopped/jammed and snapped cable. Oil pressure guage is the same, runs oil from engine no need for wires. Have you checked fuses? There will be no need to rewire the whole car. Re gearbox: you have to remove engine so I understand the $2000 quote, even fitting a second hand one would be over a grand with possibly unknown results. Edit: Was probably me who quoted that in the first place
governorsam
wiring should be fine, just get repaired what is needed. fuse box on these are prone to playing up. replace fuses, and clean up the terminals with a bit of wet and dry sandpaper. also check plugs to the dash, sounds like they were the last things to be touched. failing that, should be able to help after work some day if needed. mutiny
haha fair enough, wouldnt be suprised if it was a earthing issue though
ChickInSteelcaps
well, we found a wire off today, and by looking at the pic of engine bay, worked out where it had come off. one side has one wire at the bottom, nothing on the top ... the other has one top and bottom. worked out that the top one had slipped off... put it back on and lo & behold.. my rev counter works again, so unsure whether doing that has buggered up my tail lights/dash lights *exasperated sigh @ being a dumbgirl lol*
mutiny
na thatll just be your rev counter feed to the coil, will be irrelevant
mjrstar
I'd say if it's anything like my mini it'll just be every little rubish push together connection coming loose and falling off.. If I was you I would be hesitant to re-wire the whole car, I would find someone what is mildly electrically savvy to check all the connections. And like mutiny said earthing in behind the dash could be a bit rubbish. Also check fuses there should be a little black panel in behind where your red air horns are. Bling
*exasperated sigh @ being a dumbgirl lol* Anyone that knows a thing or two about car electrics has started knowing nothing too. So the more hands on you get the more you'll pick up / know for future problems. I usually learn by breaking things, but fixing them still ends up being cheaper than paying someone else from the start so works out all good. Best way to learn I reckon. Good luck, electrics is one of the more annoying things to have to work out / fix.

Mini.Mad
I had a similar problem in both our Minis, tail lights wouldn't go on in the LE and mine the tail lights wouldn't go on when the lights were switched on. Both turned out to be light switch faults. I suggest checking your fuse box terminals and fuses, as they are prone to going rusty, especially if it is missing the factory fuse box cover. If your car doesn't have one, Lee at Minibitz or Larry at Swift would help you out. If your gearbox needs replaced/work - be sure you check the bottom end of the engine as well. With having a gearbox in the sump, any metal fragments that come off the gearbox parts will go straight up the bores etc, which can lead to some pretty nasty engine damage - has happened to one of my mate's Minis
