Truenotch
And I'd start by having a look at the box from a J30 Maxima... Although good boxes for those can be hard to find.

Testament
so just 2wd in the rear. or setup longitudinal with locked fwd diff so you get mean low range from diff output then going through more diffs?
KKtrips
Thought of making a conversion plate to run through a VW transaxle? They must make some strong uns I gather - know of a guy down here running a Subaru 2.5T motor through a beetle box.. Was also another goat running a rover V8 through one.. but not sure how long they lasted for though They cost $7 each and are plentiful - just buy a bevvy of em - break and replace... R100
Dont under estimate a VW transaxle. Especially in a tube framed something. The wheels are move likely to spin befor you break something.

Jase
thats the ticket tom, i've been searching transaxle and found one hewland "ouch!" just got to find info on ratios etc and cut off to electronic control ie its got to be simple, auto would be easiest i think as long as can be held in a gear one on tm 3spd auto 3.08 final ratio just mean small tires i suppose and more wheel spin and leave top gear alone unless its flat
