anhonyb
for straight bolt in, you could get the 1800/2300 diff
d.p.n.s
any idea on the hp they will take as i belive the standard 1256 one is about 100hp dan
anhonyb
I've looked it up, and found that the axles were tested for power ratings by Bill Blydenstein. The small 1256cc axle is rated to 100 BHP and is prone to failures "at any time" above that. The Standard Magnum axle is rated to at 140 to 150 BHP, but any more sustained power over that and the " reliability is in question". quoted from vauxhall viva forums
Jase
torana diff my friend same car essentially, but a vl borgwarner 78 would be another good option heaps of ratios p.c.d and axle length options, 4 stud from aus r31 5x120 from vl 5x114 from coon and they're cheap have factory wats link hats (falcon) 28 spline gets 4 pin lsd option (vl v8 and turbo? + falcon) i have a stripped vl housing in my scrap bin if you want a measure taken they have a bad rep for pinion whine (i live with mine)

Jase
gemini is a completely different set up, a piazza 4 link diff could be another option, to retain 4x100
sholdowa
Is the viva a toque tube setup? Might limit your options a bit. However, knowing the way you drive, I'd be looking at a Foden back axle...
Jase
no torque tube same as torana in setup design 2 speed foden back axle would have its merits
sholdowa
no torque tube same as torana in setup design2 speed foden back axle would have its merits That's good... the only Vauxhalls I've ever worked on were the old Cresta and Chevette HSR. Sure the latter was that kind of setup.
EFI_LC
Why change it? What sort of HP are we talking as that would play a part? What is it going to be used for as that would add the next thing to the equation? What money do you want to spend? Most people would use the LC/LJ Torana diff as they have good ratios and cheap but you wouldnt want to run over 200-230hp Remember the Viva is lite so generally you dont need a ford truck sized diff unless you are seriously powering this thing. These diffs can stand some punishment but if you side step the clutch then get something else as eventually you will probably damage it. 3.9 - drag racing or around town 3.55 - good ratio for power and round town but a little low for open raod 3.36 - best of both worlds 3.08 - great open road diff with long legs 2.78 - lazy

Mike-e
bradkuni's little chevette diff has help up really well with whats been thrown at it so far, yours must be pretty similar being a "T" car would it not? (out of my element here)
Jase
similar but no torque tube on a viva, brads diff has lasted incredibly well i suspect it may have been down to luck more than strength or design though. anything will bolt in with a welder and a grinder and a mike-e vl diff housing 1400mm flange to flange ratios nothing lower than 4.11-2.7? b1600 housing 1210mm " 4.8-3.9 if you change the diff and maybe the front brakes hq stubs work which would point at getting the same p.c.d front to rear, if its going to be 4cyc blown go with a torana diff its just plain easiest and there won't be too much torque to kill it
EFI_LC
HQ and Torana are different stud pattern. Not sure how close they are but HB and LC/J use the same chassis, doors and windscreen, fuel tank etc. just the Torana has different front end
CUL8R
bradkuni's little chevette diff has help up really well with whats been thrown at it so far, yours must be pretty similar being a "T" car would it not? (out of my element here) Viva's and their derivatives are NOT "T" cars. What Graham has said above is correct... This would be my first stop to have a read over, I've never ventured here, but Im sure you'll find some help more specific to your car rather than some at best random guess's... http://droopsnootgroup.yuku.com/
