zep
Has anyone actually done this before? I've seen the topic on RR and am not convinced on the style. Am also following karmageddon's MX5 to see how that goes. I want something like this beast: This is going to be much harder than I expect, isnt it? Simon
This is going to be much harder than I expect, isnt it? Yup Have you done much body work? It's about 10x more time consuming than anything mechanical / electrical. Are those flares DIY^? Would be easier to start with something bought and modify it to fit. Weather that means taking a mold and modifying or just hacking the bought ones.
zep
I have no idea how those ones above were made, probably by some bad ass professional. I did test fit some in the tr0n about a month and a half ago and I rekcon they could do the deed. The other look I'm keen on at the moment is flares with poke, making them almost redundant! Brock-Lee
^look like ZG flares. Rob has/simon is getting a set. Pester either of them to take a mould off them
kyteler
Leon's problem is the arch diameter/scale, I believe. Plenty of flares are available, it's just a matter of getting ones that don't look out of place. ie. "Universal Flares"
zep
Yeah, they look like ZG flares, but ZG flare are about 10" longer from tip to tip than my arches, will look very bizarre. I think I have some pics on my camera of the test day... will try put them up. We used different ones on the back from the front to try get it following the arch a little better. zep
Just something not quite right about it. I love it how the rx-3 ones curve right down to the bottom of the sills, and the rx-7 ones just look right.
kyteler
Interestingly, the flares on the RHS of that RX3 look better than the ones on the LHS. Is it just me or does there seem to be the nice flattened edge on the RHS and a regular "point" on the LHS.
kyteler
I think you need to shape some up out of blocks of polystyrene and make them from that.
zep
How easy is polystyrene to work with?
Spencer
super easy with a hot wire. Even easier is modelling foam (has a finer grain than polystyrene), you buy a shit load glue it together and away you go. Once you have a shape you coat it, bog it, and give it to a lush cunt to glass up
Jase
spoke to my glass guy about this, process he suggested as follows, double side tape the area your flares will be taking on the body, add a layer of plastic with a rough side facing out ados surfboard foam to your plastic, form your flare bog and sand using mdf profiles to be able to match them to the other side of the car peel plastic and completed flare from the car do the other side then glass them and take a mold from your blanks or hope the never get busted, he spoke of close to 2 grand start to finish to do coupe ones for gem any way i liked including molds and a finished set which when thinking bout it is many man hours he reckoned getting the tape off the car afterwards could be a carnt of a job too if you f'd around for days
zep
2 grand, fuck lords. Would rather try with polystyrene first I think. Or someone find me some ZG flares that I can at least test fit. Perhaps I could get some and just cut a section out of them to shorten them.

I could pop round and have a play if you want. Maybe you could put front ZG flares on both front and rear?
My name is Russell
I've found with big flares they have to be fairly right otherwise as soon as you force them onto the body, twist them, or pinch them in together, you get cracks and changing in shape. mabie take a front escort bubble arch flare that looks to me a similar shape or something else. chop the body side of flare so you just have the outter flare, have the thing mounted / floating from body in a round about way and re mould it onto the body with fiberglass matts etc.
zep
The problem is, only looking to do bolt on style aye. Nothing else will do!
bubblegoose
tip of the day. bog and resin tend to melt polystyrene
lowlancer
Is heating and shaping some existing ones an option?
Simon
Or even as someone may have suggested, getting huge ones and cutting the inside off to the shape of the car and the width of your wheels?
