oldrx
Ok so upgrading rx2 brakes, Holden Camira caliper is so so close to fitting inside factory wheels (going to get them widened but to widen them inwards to clear caliper the tyre would more than likely hit the strut). So if i grind the caliper back about 3mm from the green line outwards will this be ok? Its about 13-15 mm thick in this section. Edit Cast Ally. sheepers
i probably wouldn't do that. can you space the whole caliper back by 3mm and run a thinner pad on the outside/thin side? it won't take long to remove a couple of mills of the pad if you rub it on the concrete? its less than perfect but its probably a better compromise than removing metal from the caliper. especially that part of the caliper, its probably the part that does the most work on the whole thing. can you run 3mm spacers and space your wheel out? they can be done legally without to much hassle. just some ideas to think about. oldrx
Cheers for the reply. I could space it but I would have to space it back by about 1 inch to clear the part of the centre of the wheel that is folded flush with the outer (wher its welded to the outer). Was thinking of getting the wheel widened inwards as well as outwards so caliper clears that folded bit but there isnt enough room with standard struts to move it 1 in. Its not so much a forward backwards space issue, the prob is that the wheel diameter is too small (just) to fit the caliper inside it if you know what i mean. l1ttle_d3vil
i wouldn't... previous owner did that to his calipers before i got the car, luckily they failed while i was doing burnouts... (thats brake fluid leaking down the side)
shizzl
i doubt the camira calipers are 4pot though, so no fluid on that side...
Simon
I wouldn't see a problem in doing that. Providing you don't tough the backing part to the pad. You would have to check them often too for cracks or anything suspicious. Not ideal but still safe-ish.
shizzl
just re-read it....do you want to remove all material basically 3mm from the green line outwards? if so, what will be left to hold the pad in place? as i take it that will remove the 2 pad fingers... or are you only wanting to removed about 3mm of material from that face? oldrx
Yeah i only want to remove 3mm from that face and only from the green line outwards (about 20mm ish from the line to edge of caliper) So will leave it atleast 10mm thick. They are only single piston calipers but better than factory. No fluid that side of caliper. I wont need to touch any of the inside face that holds the pad. If thats what you mean Simon? kpr
kinda hard to say without having a good look at the caliper, as to how safe it would be after a trim. have gave some a slight skim before, similar to what you want to do. but yeah was different calipers that had alot of meat in that area
Simon
Oh I see what you are trying to do now. Yeah I would be happy doing that.
cletus
i wouldnt do that, theres probably a lot of load on that part of the caliper stopping the two`fingers` from bending up under loading. Plus im pretty sure they are cast alloy not iron?
oldrx
Hmmm differing opinions. i wouldnt do that, theres probably a lot of load on that part of the caliper stopping the two`fingers` from bending up under loading.Plus im pretty sure they are cast alloy not iron? Yeah there would be a fair amount of load i guess but at the end of the day im not taking off fuck all and its only a basic car not gunna be driven that hard. Sorry yes the main body i want to mod is cast aluminium. Might wait to see if the wheel place can do anything about it when they widen the wheels. If not then i think i will do it. Any more opinions welcome...
Bling
I wouldn't fuck with my brakes, personally. Get something else that fits, or change something else to suit. Take it to a brake specialist and see what they say. I can't imagine many professionals saying its safe to grind away strength of a caliper
Simon
Take it to a brake specialist and see what they say. I can't imagine many professionals saying its safe to grind away strength of a caliper They would sell you another set for millions. Can you take a picture from the other side under the line? It looks like its just a bulge for the sake of it there. So it wouldn't matter how much gets taken off.

It is kinda like a bulge there - thicker than the rest of caliper. Will put pics up when sorted. BZG - its not ideal i know but only mega bucks will fix that and i need a povo upgrade for a few years til can afford better wheels.
shizzl
can you run a set of 15mm or 25mm spacers or something to fix it?
oldrx
can you run a set of 15mm or 25mm spacers or something to fix it? Yeah i guess if i used 25mm spacers it would all fit. Thats a big ass spacer though And an inch less dish on front i guess?

shizzl
i wouldnt take any more than 3mm off that tbh... up to 3mm should be sweet...if you get it all even, then sandblast the ground off bits no one will notice really, then paint them.. V8Pete
What size are the rims? Are cast iron calipers any thinner usually? I just swapped my Camira calipers for some cast iron Calibra calipers. They're bigger diameter but don't know how they compare in the direction you want to gain clearance. If I'd seen this earlier I would've been able to check, but I binned the old calipers today.
