Brock-Lee
I just bought a 910 wagon. lol dont ask me why, impulse buy. Stem seals are gone on it so she smokes like *insert somthing that smoke alot that I cant think of* on start up but clears after that. Would it be worth doing seals or just whack a good head on it. cheers
sholdowa
If you've got good compression, then just do the seals.you can often get magical devices to keep the valves up so you don't have to take the head off... plug out and compressed air usually. Brock-Lee
sweet. it the l20b model if that makes any difference. how hard are the stem seals to do? like a saturday out in the morning and back together before its time to drink or is it a cunt of a job that ppl go "nah she can smoke cos I hate doing stem seals" cheers
forced
You'd probably better off to just give it new rings.
Brock-Lee
sweet. now that I have done before lol. I will just let her smoke up a storm for a lil while first. cheers guys.
Bullitt
Back when I had an L20b I read up on how to do this without taking the head off, something along the lines of piling rope in through the spark plug holes. Never did try it though.

fuel
You'd probably better off to just give it new rings. How will rings fix leaky valve stem seals? Assuming that smoke is actually from leaky valve stem seals of course. Replace rings and the smoke is still there...
Ke36
i assume he meant go to the effort of taking the head off and doing seals and rings?
Hemi
why >??? rings dont give the symptoms he is talking bout .. in fact no where near valve stem seals are piss easy to do unless you havea fuckgay head like mine where they are riiiiggght down inside and cant get fucking valve springs off and on etc .. rant over id be a lazy and cheap cunt and put 85/140 in the engine lofls bu thats bad for cold running
forced
why >??? rings dont give the symptoms he is talking bout .. in fact no where near How sure are you?
peteretep
smoke on start up is generally from valve stem seals, its from when the engine is sitting and oil runs down the stem... if you thought it was the rings, do a compression test? it wont tell you of worn stem seals but will tell you of worn rings
forced
Compression rings are for........... compression. Oil rings are for..........................oil.
peteretep
how often are your oil rings wasted but your compression rings still good the obvious answer here is stem seals, if is was rings then it would continue to smoke
forced
The answer, is when the motor has overheated, the rings loose tension, oil gets past the compression rings and then gives a "good" compression test. How do you suppose valve stem seals actually go bad? when the rings are still good?
fuel
usually smoke on first startup and when idling (ie under vacuum for a prolonged time) is a sure sign of valve stem seals, smoke on acceleration or just constant smoke in general would point to oil control rings poked. Sure it could be the rings in question, but it's more likely the valve stem seals in this particular case.
