ok ive got a 1977 1300 escort and i scraped the idea of getting a bigger engine (petrol prices) and i was wondering how to get some nice quick and cheapish horsepower , my m8s suggested i get extractors (which are sitting in my room) a twin throat carby (down/sidedraguth they ddnt say) and get my cam worked into a lumpy cam or sumthing but i was wondering if there was anythign else i might be overlookoing that could help alot...any help appreciated thank yoiu ...btw my esky was in aucks on fri if anyone saw a blue esky with vinyl roof and turbo mags ..kewl

yeah extractors and a webber... use the eskie came out with a webber i think all the 1600 ones did so just get one of the with the manifold.

i don't know much about cams but yeah they make it go hard i think its better just to get a new cam but you probbaly want just a mild one.

you could try and do some port matching to apparently it gets a you a few more horsepower.... you will need to be able to take the head etc off to do that.. probably better to do it at the same time as the cam if you choose to

Easyest way to increase horsepower (sorta) is to loose weight, so get rid of anything you dont need (ie rubbish!)

One thing that a few people over look that can often ad alittle power is the earth wires, make sure they are all in good cond, as well as all other leads etc.

check your fuel filter (if you dont have one get one) make sure your petrol tank isnt full of crap, and use 96 octane gas.

dont for get the brakes either:) check the pads shoes whatever too :)

get an electric fan maybe, and a electric water pump, a water pump and fan can drain as much as 20-30 hp. (you could go an electric fuel pump to, same principle, but that might be an overkill for a 1300.

try to drop weight, look for sh1t the car really doesnt need, carpet underlay, extra metal brackets that dont hold jack anymore, small space saver wheel, even a smaller jack (aslong as it can take the weight of the car)

an oil cooler (keep the oil cool and it will do its job better and take stress/heat of the crank....... less friction=more power)

if you was after exhaleration, maybe a smaller diameter rear tyre (but it will lower the car) its like riding a bike when your a kid, "small legs have trouble spining big wheels" anser "make wheels small - they turn faster.

try, heat wrapping the headers, keeps the heat in the headers and outta the engine bay, HPC if you got the coin. heat is the enemy!

thats about all i think off at the mo..... but as the guys said, cam spec/grind

extrators A MUST! better fllowing intake, and more gas ie bigger carb, and do the standard K&N thing.

nuff said!

have fun

  • 5 weeks later...

if you do to much to a 1300 it will end up being just as economical or un economical as a 1600, it's not hard to take the engine out of a esky, just make sure the new one as ready to be put in, ie. rings arn't worn and the head's not cracked (i made that mistake, now i have to take the engine out again, gutted

yea thats true but i cant be bothered finding one i mean if sumone here has one that can basically drop in and go im keen but otherwise ill stick with the 1300 gets up to 70 and thats all i need to go atm (if i have to travel i use my m8s skyline)

Yea I put a aftermarket weber twin troat downdraught on it and it made a huge difference, I had to take it off though because its in big need of a recondition. I've got extractors sitting in the garage too, once I put both the carb and the extractors on it should go like nuts

go for a 1600 its got a pretty good fuel/power ratio (ok i made that up) but it seems it would. and after doin all that to 1300 it wouldnt exactly do a million miles to the gallon anyway. ive got a 1300 right now so im thinking of selling my eski and getting a 2dr mk1/mk2 and dropping a zetec in :D:D can get em for like 450 pounds or sum shit so dats like less than $1500

Aight, dont get me rong, im not flaming or anything, just a little interested, but.... how fast can a 1300 carbi really be, i mean ive been in 1300 efi's and well, it was slow as a dog, and this is new technology(it was a 1998) .The esky engines are 20 or so years old so how can they compare/compete? some one fill me in?

I know a worked pinto can be quite fast, but a 1300 or 1600..?

Used to have a ratz as 2lt carbi 626 in my old 323(1980) and it went alrite, not really fast- my daily diver ( a pos honda 1600 sohc) would have kicked its ass.

W0rd!
