This thread is relevant to my interests.

A few years ago I installed DOS 6.2 and Win 3.1 or 3.11 on an mid 2000s Pentium laptop I had for shits and giggles. It must have been a rainy day or something.

OMG all the speed and it booted up in about 7 seconds.

Tried to install Netscape Navigator and see what the internet did but couldn't make the LAN connection work on old Windows.

  2. These have the potential to be cool if they're not white/silver and being your Uber.

Was seriously looking at a Prius C / Aqua as a small roundabout and for my 500km/week commute. Don't need actual power in Auckland traffic and to minimise fuel consumption.

These are the later 1.8 motor right?

  3. I'm pretty sure they are interchangeable.

What's the jetting in the 32/36 because they were used on much larger engines. I ran a 28/36 DCD with too large jets and it was terrible but tune it down smaller and it was fine.

You can also take a SPI injection unit off a Falcon and it pretty much bolts up too (with some slight slotting) In case you want to run EFI with massive injectors at 0.05% duty cycle :)

Whats your thoughts on this lol

Having gone down both paths. Modern Japanese on injection is the way of the future.

You can spend a lot of money making an old engine only half as good as a modern twin cam.

Also 4AGEs are an old engine now. Basic 16v design is 35 years old now.

MX5 engine in rwd is the go.

  5. Having mucked around with Vivas for 15+ years there are a few traps to consider.  First throw the old OHC motor in the bin.  They're rubbish.  Sieves have more oil retention capability.

    1. Engine block height.  Some modern RWD engines are simply too tall and unless you dry sump them they don't fit nicely (e.g. Beams 3SGE from memory).

    2. The rack is in front of the crossmember so something with a rear sump is best, otherwise be prepared to cut and shut the sump, or refer point 1. above.

    3. Availability of parts.  I did my 4AGE conversion when bits were cheap and plentiful. Not so much now.

    3. Get something RWD from factory - such as MX-5 B6/BP type engine, SR20DE(T) etc.  Don't waste your time converting a FWD engine.

    4. Gearbox length.  Getting the engine far enough back for nice handling means the gear stick wants to come out where the handbrake is.  That's not ideal.  Even with a 4AGE and W57 I had to shorten my handbrake lever otherwise it fouled when in 2nd and 4th.

    5. Exhaust.  The crossmember has some "outrigger" type bits that mean a lot of OEM headers don't fit nicely, or at all, also aim for an engine with the intake on the drivers side, and exhaust on the passenger side otherwise you get fouling on the steering shaft or need a tight twisty header to clear it.

    6. Contrary to point 5 above, the brake booster on an 1800 is quite big so if the head is too wide and the intake too long it might cause it to foul.  Moreso in an HB than an HC if I recall correctly.

Vivas are light, you can have fun with not much power (~150hp), and you won't break diffs at that level.  1800 diffs and running gear is fine, brakes are okay.

Personally, if I was doing it again I'd get an early MX5 engine and gearbox setup and run that.

Brain dump over.  There's lots more stuff to think about...
