  1. How far off is 3d printing from doing a lens, would it even be possible?
  2. Good to see you're finally building something practical!
  3. Depending on the farm situation I might see you out there
  4. Had a package turn up from Azzurro containing the shell and internal goodies of a weber dhs carb, from this I hope to sort out the horrible idle i've been putting up with from blocking off the idle circuit due to the above broken idle mixture screw, and that the shaft is terribly flogged out on my carb! The body he supplied had stripped threads on the accelerator pump but I saved that by finding some longer screws to reach what little thread is left and opened up the worst hole from M4 to M5 to hold the whole lot together. With a good clean its all back together and for the first time since removing the twin carb set up I have a steady idle, i've only managed a quick drive around the block but everything feels fine and she settles to a nice 800rpm idle quite comfortably. As i've been using the 2105's idle screw to block the idle circuit in the niva, it was duly reunited and I had the joy of two magnificent pieces of russian engineering purring away in the driveway.
  5. +1 for awesome, your BBQ is a king + shed envy
  6. Someone better pay good money for the 124 so I don't get depressed over 'it could have been mine'
  7. Awesome, they are built by a european firm, look pretty good from the pics but from the use of the vehicle its possibly easier to buy a trailer! The Aussie ones look pretty smart too Cheers guys
  8. How would portal axles be assessed under cert, is it possible for scratch built or only factory units? A mate has found a company overseas making them and is getting keen for a set which has me interested if they can be road legal here if not an OE item. As they are made to order i'm guessing they'd be assessed as custom and so need weld tests etc?
  9. Have you had any breakthroughs with the carbs? I'm getting excited to hear this thing sing!
  10. good call, maybe generate some text in photoshop at the same resolution/size as the screen for 1:1 reproduction? or by now is it easier to just walk around with an hdmi cable in the laptop
  11. So who's guarding the south island tonight?
  12. So I was thinking the same thing and a buddy made a good point of putting some text files as .jpg onto a usb stick and walk around the shop plugging it in to have a geez, he was a tv repairman that geeked out on them and also recommended LG. A mate also brought a 40" panasonic cinema screen that looked pretty good to use as a screen but for the price of the thing......
  13. What are you doing with the brochures if 6 will only last you to the new year? you're a sick man
  14. Started intending to do civil then after two summers of roading I realised I liked playing with the big machines more than building roads so swapped over to mechanical, possibly not the best move career wise in NZ right now but for me a better move.
  15. ^^^ i've had issues with the same thing, even new ones sometimes don't seal, pretty rough but fine wet and dry with the needle in the drill fixed that issue. Also I've twisted the float while setting the depth in a hurry enough to clash with the side and jam open.
  16. Yeah, I have a lada idle screw blocking the circuit off and put a larger screw in the shaft stop to adjust the idle, not ideal but it goes! wrong end of the month now for cash, but once all the bills are settled next week I'll wire you some cash yip, one year left on my eng degree, then back to the real world! buy on if you can, cheap fun! I know of a red one for sale in chch
  17. With comrade Baxter in town, a quick tour of the countryside was on order If you think two Niva's in one place is impressive, hows this, THREE! The white one was rescued from the scrap heap and is being brought back to life here in Canterbury, it has a 2L twin cam and will be back to road legal shortly. Apologies for no fixit photos, it would seem being parked between two Toyotas for so long offers some form of herd immunity from reliability issues.
  18. Awesome! is it possible to put the spring onto the clutch lever directly as a fail safe? if it all goes west the clutch is depressed and the car stops rather than drives on
  19. I stole some panel steel of a mate cos he brought a whole sheet for $60, cheap as chips really
  20. Finally got the balls today to look at the rust on the front gaurd, dug deep with the grinder and was greeted by lots of dust but not as much rot as I was expecting, what looked like really bad scale was just flaky underseal, ripped that off with the wire wheel and found okish steel underneath, will rust treat the lot and spray some new underseal in there before the patch goes on over the top. Before: After: The small hole on the sill had me worried but it still seems to be full thickness, we'll see what happens when the patch goes in! But on the brightside, I've been for a quick drive up the road and back, she's only a few welds away from a date with the wof man Nice oil stain forming on the drive from the niva, almost enough excuse to buy a waterblaster
  21. SSD is next level awesome in my mac, twice as fast as before, might have to hook up a hdd this arvo and have a play, see if it does the same. Had a look at external ssd drives not too long ago and the prices are similar to what I was paying a few years back for a hdd.
  22. I saw that on Facebook not too long ago and had massive wants, look forward to seeing more pics!
  23. Sad day for the Niva, with the dellortos not quite how i'd like them and running a little rich (expensive!) I made the call to swap them out for the standard carb because I have so little time and don't want to inflict any further damage if things arn't right. Only took 1/2 an hour to inflict so much pain, the test drive was rather quiet and boring, its either down on low range torque or induction noise = torque, either way sad, boo! anyway, reason to kill the original carb is because its stuffed, freeplay in the shafts, wear around the butterflies that won't seal and worse of all the idle mixture screw is poked, if anyone has a spare i'd love to talk, even better a servicable weber dhs 34 or derivitive? will throw up a wtb to for good measure! Any takers?
  24. Lame excuse, but mine is worse, Uni is kicking my arse and so need to spend more time behind a computer /sadface
  25. The engine is now all back together including the original fuel pump While putting the carb back together I had a few bits left over in the rebuild kit, few I knew and wasn't worried about but one little jet had me stumped, noticing a threaded hole on the side with no screw I dug out another carb and attached to the other side of a small brass screw was the random jet, referring to the workshop manual it turns out its for the idle circuit, further explains the reluctance to start! With everything back together and a fresh charged battery in the hole I primed the carb (so cool having a primer lever!) and turned the key, first pop and away, I've had her up to temp and everything seems happy only when I decided I needed a drive I ran out of gas, so hopefully this weekend I'll top her up and go for a sneaky drive. Just need to sort some rust and put the interior back together and she'll be ready for a date with the wof man. I've also cleaned the block and engine bay of most of the muck, I planned to paint the rocker cover but its got a cool rust/paint/patina look so I'm just gunna leave it, with new gaskets all round it shouldn't leak too much oil, also replaced the heater hoses, now waiting for the heater tap to leak all over the interior....
