ul9601
I had this towbar on my car but keep whacking my shin into it, so took it off. Also have this random one with removable tongue. How tricky would it be to chop off the centre section and graft it on?
Bling
Depends what you use it for. Bike rack, maybe it would be ok. Proper towing, sounds like a bad idea. Would be better off getting one made for your car IMO. 2c
kyteler
Easier to look where you're walking I would have thought? 2
Adoom
Just C-Notch your shins at towbar height. 3

Can you cut steel and weld? Bling
Just because you can legally cut and shut a towbar, doesn't mean you should
ul9601
it would be mainly for rear end protection, with very occasional towing. i can cut alright, but I'd probably leave the welding to someone with less shakey hands... Mof
Cut that old tongue off, get a towbar place to weld a bit of box underneath, and wang one of these in it https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/sca-sca-towing-hitch---2250kg-removable-standard/553480.html https://www.trailerpartsnz.com/product_info.php/trojan-towball-mount-3500kg-98mm-227mm-p-3647?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9eqK2-LQ5wIVWK6WCh1-OwcAEAQYASABEgJDzfD_BwE
a.craw4d
Cut the whole removable tongue bracket off and glue it onto your towbar, easy. Have done it a few times myself. I've fitted heaps of towbars through my old work, and made a fair few from scratch. The quality on the premade ready to fit kit's is questionable at best. Without knowing your welding ability, I'd say you are more than capable of doing a better job than most.
Nominal
DIY Removable towbar kit. I think the tongue was from a Hiace or something?. Anyway, a bit of welding, grinding and bolting and it's worked fine for a few years, even with some fair loads.

I'll upload a photo of some of my "better" welding "work" for your amusement - thanks for your confidence in me though
