DoBro Jesus
Right, so my new corolla is running like a sack, sometimes it idles sweet then sometimes it bogs down and just dies at idle, super inconsistent too, also when cruising along at 50ks it jerks and hesitates quite a bit, when I put my foot down to accelerate its sweet, no loss of power or anything its just on light throttle and idle. Check engine light came on so plugged it into Scan tool and came up with running rich, my first guess is faulty or dirty MAF but is there any Toyota gurus on here who will have a better idea? Its a 2001 runx with the 2zz-ge and 6speed box. Chur.
chris r
Egr valve possbly jamming open, the mrs runyx one was shit. block it off/ give it a clean and see how it goes
AllTorque
I'd go with afm. Does it have a paper air filter or a go fast one? Most Toyotas of that era use the same afm so you might find one somewhere you can try.
DoBro Jesus
Got an hks mushroom thing, I've heard they're an oiled type of filter so oil from that could be gumming up AFM?
AllTorque
Those ones don't usually have oil I thought, but if it does it will mess with the hot wire of the afm. Try giving the afm a clean with some contact cleaner or you can get afm specific cleaner.
DoBro Jesus
Yeah was gonna get some tomorrow and give it a hoon, CRC do an afm cleaner for 20 bucks or so, just thought it throw it out there if its happened to someone else and they have the exact answer i'm looking for haha. japawagons
If you pull the air flow meter out of its housing, sometimes are one piece sometimes have weird toque security screws, but if its contaminated you will actually see the dirt and oil build up... Air flow meter cleaner is good shit if its actually contaminated.
Seedy Al
also guess afm
AllTorque
If you're planning on keeping the car I'd recommend getting an original airbox and fitting a normal paper filter (genuine Toyota parts of course )
DoBro Jesus
Yeah that was actually my next plan of attack as well as interior trim as some joker broke virtually all the clips trying to wrap the trim with that horrendous carbon fibre wrap shit haha. piazzanoob
Clean the EGR valve and Air flow meter and the throttle body And is it only when it's cold or? Perhaps load up the engine when it's cold and hot by holding handbrake up and trying to take off at 2000rpm As could possibly be coil packs as they fail quite often. DoBro Jesus
Idles alright when cold but still hesitates and jerks when driving. fuck me air flow meters are 65 clams at pick-a-part!
AllTorque
Those Toyota ones would fit in your pocket.

japawagons
2nd Hand Airflow meters are junk. Definitely worth buying genuine when it comes to AFMs...
DoBro Jesus
So got that airflow meter cleaner and gave it a good clean, dried it and put back in, check engine light back on and seemed to run worse, decided to rip into it today so took throttle body off and gave it a good clean along with the IACV, put it back together and no check engine light and seems to be running sweet now! fingers crossed it stays that way haha.
