Bangbug
Nothing on the engine?I know a bloke with a Mk1 with a beams and he keeps killing it due to oiling issues. Are these the issues you were reading about?I think it's the angle of his engine and the sump layout but it's been to clever chaps and keeps being a PITA.
Celica RA45
well i like to see you finish this by years end, and i promise to have my car done as well
pe-arce
Yea i need to be done by September for the start of the race season. Don't finish yours too soon otherwise I'll be tempted to upgrade to the new engine..
legendlives
Superb fabrication skills, and a great car! That will sure be a heap of fun when it's done.
pe-arce
Hey guys. Need some input... To date the car has been built as a single seater with the dry sump tank in the passenger position but I have all along thought it would be cool to have the passenger seat to take the odd mate for a hoon... But this makes 2 issues.. The exhaust tunnel means the seat would be sitting up quite a bit higher than the drivers so aesthetically not very pleasing.. Who doesn't like a good bit of symmetry? And I'd likely pull it out for racing anyway. And the relocation of the tank.. It could either go engine bay.. don't really like this as I'm moving weight forward and it'll be annoying to fit in up there. It could go behind the seats or in the boot. Both adding hose length and less than ideal. Should I add the passenger seat? If so where should I put the oil tank? Or should I just carry on as it is a single seater? Roman
Keep it as is, and then if later on you decide that it's a ball ache not being able to take passengers, add a seat. It's the same amount of work whether you do it sooner or later, but it means that in the meantime you can concentrate on the critical path towards having a running car. pe-arce
Yea the only thing is I'd rather do all the cutting and welding now before it gets painted.
Celica RA45
put the oil tank behind the passenger seat and box it out with a lid on the top .that way you can have the best of both worlds .my tank is only in the front passenger side tower as i need weight there to try to balance out the weigh tof car with me in it
Celica RA45
so where you have the tank in the pic ,can you still put the seat in ,also with the full lock and the weld in sections ,did you take the springs out of the shocks so under full brakes the tyres wont hit and scrub the new tyre wells
pe-arce
No where the tank is in the pic is about where the body of the passenger will end up. Yes the car has springs out and is sitting on bump stops so should be plenty of clearance. I also should end up with a little bit more caster by the time I have the sway bar in properly so that will increase the clearance further.
xygtho
Move the tank to rear of passenger compartment / boot / wherever you want. Weld in seat brackets to suit. Plumb tank and worry about the passenger seat later?
Truenotch
Passengers seats can be fun, but are definitely not essential.... I've only fitted mine a few times in the last 7 years. I get what you're saying though, it's always nice to have the option. Would people be able to scrunch their feet in next to the tank? pe-arce
Na I chucked the seat in that side and sat down to explore the feet room option but it's pretty snug in there. Have welded the required plate in for the passenger seat so if I want I just need to make up some custom high rise seat brackets to get it over the exhaust tunnel and then drill some holes to bolt it down. Now just have to remount the oil tank in the back.
pe-arce
Will also weld in seat belt anchor points in advance so no welding later on.
KKtrips
Could you mount the tank horizontally above where the passengers feet would sit? (under the "dash"?) Yes the seat may have to sit higher but you could just mount the rails discreetly. Then as long as you make the seat easily removable then yes the aesthetic would be disturbed by having a higher passenger than driver - but it will only be when you have the passenger and seat in there and surely you won't be going 10/10ths with a passenger in there so car balance won't be an issue.. pe-arce
Na can't mount tank horizontally as the oil needs to spin round the tank on return and de-airate through some baffles on the way down.
Celica RA45
just make a mount behind the seat for the tank and box it in ,so when the seats not in you can get to it easy

Celica RA45
1 thing on inside fuel lines i run them lower down along the bottom of the tunnel ,incase you have a tail shaft or flywheel letting go at high revs ,could turn you into 1 bbq
