two_days_late
Hey guys, Have just started working on the escort again. It was undersealed a good year or so ago and a good portion of it still isn't dry. Is there a trick to making it go off quicker? It's horrible tar type shit and if I knew it was going to be like this I never would have gotten it put on. The inside of my boot has also been done with it, and it would be nice to remove it from there... but I have a feeling removing it will be near on impossible. I'm going to need to remove some of it as its just been slapped over everything under the car (handbrake mechanism, brake line mounts etc). Has anyone else dealt with this stuff and have any ideas? 12 months and still not gone off seems strange to me? Cheers Matt

Bling
Just try thinners / meths / petrol and see what shifts it. Then maybe apply that and use a plastic scraper and it might come off alright.
flyingbrick
Yeah petrol and a scraper then petrol and a shit tonne of rags. Then brake cleaner and another shit tonne of rags
vegie
mineral turpentine is the ducks nuts for removing underseal. worked magic on my datsun. scrape it off and hit it with turps...
Llama
No idea why it hasn't gone off, but dry ice is pretty good for freezing it and getting it brittle enough to chip off.
two_days_late
i wonder if its because the cars been in a cold garage the whole time. Think I'll get it outside this weekend and give it a go with some petrol etc.. I'm sure it's going to make a horrible mess inside the boot though. snapper
perhaps all of the solvent's gone now, and it didn't set while it was there. you could try a heat gun to set it. I'd be freezing it off, doing that section again, and ensuring there was some heat *NOT A NAKED FLAME*. BAKING on a sunny day might help. two_days_late
Thinners got the stuff off, though its gonna be a huge mission to remove it all. Need to figure out how to make it dry.
JoKer
it does normally stay soft only needs to come off specific parts, just grab a paintbrush and get to it with thinners/petrol
flyingbrick
Man it shouldn't matter if it gets baked straight away or not. The solvents should evaporate out eventually no matter what you do- assuming the mixture is right.
Truenotch
I'm pretty sure it stays sticky and shitty for a LONG time anyway. Throw your hand under a car that's been recently imported and see what happens.
