Recomend a Mechanic - Modern Daily - Wellington

Thought this was the best place to post this.

Looking for a recommendation for a garage in Wellington to service our modern daily. Can't be bother doing stuff on it ourselves.

2003 BMW 318ti

Needs an oil and filter change, brake checkover and adjust. Maybe needs handbrake cables replaced, possibly pads as well. All in all, just a good general service.

Currently have had Dave Tunley of Taranaki Street recommended. Would prefer a garage within walking distance of the CBD for easy dropoff. May touch base with Jeff Gray too, see what their ballpark figure is.

Cheers guys. Just checked with BMW. The 60,000 km inspection is meant to be Inspection 1. $300 to $400. Is pretty comprehensive:

Won't include brake cable/pad replacement, and they figure a couple of hours on the ramp to complete it all. Always had great service there too. Will try Autocare too.

Why not ask the people that have recommended them?

A mechanic that specialises in European cars should know what's what with your car. That said, the faults / servicing you're after most places should handle fine. So Autocare Kilbirnie or anywhere else you see people recommend should be fine. Are you wanting this done before xmas? :P I'm not sure how much luck you'll have.

Auto Care Kilbirnie..

Book it in with Shaz.. I think they drop off people in town sometimes...

We will drop you off in town at 8.10am but you will need to make your own way back to us by 5pm. We're pretty close to booked up if you're looking at getting it done before Christmas though. I think it's just Thursday and Friday in the book left now.

Oh and I'll be on leave until Monday, so you may be dealing with someone else if you call up.

I had a big argument with Page European a few years ago when I dropped my BMW in for a pre-purchase inspection and they refused to tell me anything about it. I've been actively avoiding them and trying to convince others to do the same ever since.

I go to Powerhaus on Tinakori Road. Theyre pricey but theyre the only people Ive found who can actually work on my Peugeot (apparently 106's have different diagnostic plugs to bigger Pugs and every mechanic thinks they can work on them till they try).

who was paying for the pre-purch? if it wasn't you, and was your prospective purchaser - it's fair enough, mate. their contract is with the purchaser, the one engaging and paying for their services. were you expecting a freebie?

If you paid for a house valuation, you'd be pretty pissed if they then gifted the information you'd paid for, to the vendor.

It was them that paid for it. I have purchased a number of other cars in similar circumstances where I have paid for either an AA check or a mechanic and in every case the inspector has provided it to the owner when they picked up the car and I then got it off them.

I wasn't expecting a freebie as the prepurchase inspection has very little value to me as a seller other than to confirm what the prospective purchaser suggests. It would be easy for the buyer to claim everything was wrong with the car and I needed to halve my price in order for them to still buy it. While I have a reasonable knowledge of my own car it would be easy for a mechanic to find something I wasn't aware of but it would be just as easy for the buyer to claim something that was completely false.

There is no advantage in the garage withholding the report from me and it has subsequently cost them several thousand dollars of my business,

well, I understand your opinion and viewpoint; I guess we simply disagree (I think Page displayed strong ethics).

If I were the proprietor of the business and heard you weren't expecting a freebie as you did not hold value in the report, but withheld further business on the basis of not getting the information for free - I'd interpret that as 'you expected the information for free/a freebie'.

to spin it the other way - you're the proprietor. I come in and say "hey, so you did the inspection - how'd it look? I don't really hold much value in what you've just charged for - can I have a look out of curiousity?" - you'd probably tell me to F*%k off, and quickly.

simple solution - if the purchaser suggests there's loads wrong having read the report, there's four simple words to use: "show me the proof" - and you can negotiate accordingly.

cheers

We probably shouldn't take this thread any further offtopic but just one last post from me on this.

I will always tell a prospective purchaser everything I know about a car I'm selling but I see no obligation to hire a mechanic to find out anything I'm not aware of. Having a pre-purchase inspection doesn't make my car more valuable or easier to sell. My sole reason for wanting the knowledge was to remove any information asymmetry particularly as in this case the buyer wasn't local so I wouldn't get to see the report at all during negotiations. I didn't even care if I didn't see the report just a couple of words about whether there was anything major wrong with etc would have been sufficient.

I can see where your coming from and its the same view Page had with me too but I consider it poor customer service. I have no other reason to dislike them and I could have easily said on here to stay away from them without further reason which may have held more weight. But if anyone else reading this agrees with me they can make an informed choice.

fair enough! that would not be unreasonable, and would likely have struck a balance between hard-line ethics and keeping an existing customer happy and maintaining that relationship.
