burrowssj
Hard to explain but with the engine bolted to the gearbox the cross member holes in the chassis are at least 100mm to far back for the gearbox mount point. This is in a mk2 cortina that was auto column going to manual column. And what is illegal here? Can I use a bracket to join them or does a new cross member have to be made and new holes drilled into the chassis ? I'm using the automatic cross member as the tunnel is wider than the manual and the manual is not wide enough. two steps forward one step back good times please help me oldschoolers
KKtrips
If I remember correctly you flip the auto crossmember around to get it to fit?? Or that could be the 5spd conversion in Escorts.. hmmm now I'm doubting myself..
Raizer
5 speed into Escorts and mk3/4/5 Cortinas uses the auto crossmember in backwards. Cortina uses Cortina auto member, escort into escort.
burrowssj
sorry for the rubbish photos but its hard to get pics when cars only on stands First pic shows cross member being in the right place and second shows how far away is it from engine
Raizer
Drill holes and bolt through floor with plates on top?
Slacker_Sam.
When I did a manual conversion on an Mk1 escort I had to make a "custom" mount. As the mounting points on the automatic body were way to far back.
- i5oogt -
are you using the auto crossmember or the manual one? from memory that looks like an auto one, im sure the manual ones have more of a curve in them

KKtrips
Just a thought but perhaps a 5spd behind your motor will actually fit on the factory auto crossmember (albeit flipped) in the factory mount holes AND give you 5 speeds? Only problem is it won't be column shift any longer..
burrowssj
I'm willing to try anything at this stage. I have 4 gearbox's none of which fit haha. Would anyone be able to measure the distance from the outside of bellhousing to the mount point on there 5 speed? that would give me a good idea. And can you legally use an extension bracket on a cross member ? I was really hoping to get it driving for labour weekend because the 50yr coritna show is on

- i5oogt -
easiest way will be to make a custom mount for the 4 speed box. i dont think 5 speed bellhousing fits onto the crossflow, then you have hydraulic clutch on the mk2 whereas the 5 speed runs a cable. I have looked into the 5 speed thing with a mate and it requires alot of custom work.

This method is what you use to put a 5 speed in a mk3,4 or 5 5 speed sierra type9 plus auto crossmember from a mk3,4,5 = bolt in 5 speed conversion... plus the other part you need is the sierra speedo cable as its loner than a cortina one
burrowssj
Yay I found an easy solution!! Today after getting growled at for buying a cbr250r and having no where to put it I decided to clean out the garage. Its a mess, liquefaction and broken stuff everywhere. So while I'm cleaning this garage I stumbled apon an old escort box I brought. And it just happened to have an offset cross member on the box!!! So by adding a new piece of plate steel on to the cross member I can re-drill holes and bolt up the gearbox an cut off the excess steel! Maybe there is still hope for the 50years of cortina meet! pictures speak a thousand words so here you go!
Bling
Are you certing this or hoping it won't be noticed? Modifying a mount will mean cert time if you want it proper legal IIRC. Just something to be aware of anyway.
burrowssj
Yea unfortunately there is no crossmember that will fix my issue so it will have to be custom made. Should be fine for cert might need a couple things done but most of it will be renewed anyways. I just wanted to get it on the road for the cortina meet. As long as i'm moving forward I'm happy
