Seedy Al
hey guys So, i have my lovely new VW, and it has a oil temp gauge, seeing as it doesnt have a water cooling system How long driving would you expect to get a reading on this thing?? I'm not sure if its working or not, and I'm not really that keen to attempt a decent trip i know it does, So far i have only driven the van from my house to work, and that was about 15min drive. i dont recall the gauge really reading anything. thoughts? Unclejake
It depends on what temp it starts reading from. The race car had one that started at 45 degrees C and I could never get it to read in the shed, even at supper fast idle and with the water at 180 degrees F. So yuh. Dunno. Was that helpful cunt? tortron
Air cooled engines run hot. So pretty quickly at idle. I would expect to see life after 15 min slow running
CaMpylobacter
pug ones register after about 15min on the open road from memory. earth out the sender to check your wirng and gauge operation, then leave it idling once you get to work for 10 minutes or so to see what happens. couple it with an oil pressure gauge, too. oil pressure can give just as much idea as to oil temp as an oil temp gauge. that depends on you dropping to lowish revs, though. Seedy Al
hmmm. last time I turned the car off I noticed the guage did move slightly maybe need to take it for a decent drive. Also, yes I agree. oil pressure gauge will be a good idea. I hed better find a sweet one this weekend
felixx
CDL I got a trisco oil pressure gauge frm Repco.. $35 or so. The copper capilary tube was only $15. It looks oldschool too.
CaMpylobacter
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 580905.htm i've found these accurate and well priced you'll want an electric one for a rear engined steed, i imagine.
10Speed
sometimes (it's not that uncommon) people remove the thermostat and flaps from the cooling tin, making things very slow to warm up....
drtdvl
i use oil pressure and oil temp in the 205, oil pressure when cold i sky high when at idle like 70+ psi and drops to around 30 when warm. oil temp takes a good while to warm up - typically as above when cold and just idling it will take 10 min or so to start to really get above 70^c
anglia4
Our race car has an oil temp gauge in it. Took us what seemed like ages (prob 15 mins or maybe more) to get some temperature in the oil with the 354 running and heating elements on the dry sump tank It does carry a fuck tonne of oil though
keltik
My wagon hits normal coolant temp after 7-8 mins of flat 50kph driving. Oil has barely reached 75*C by the time i get to work 15mins away and over a large hill.
